Tell me if you disagree, but I think few things are yuckier than slurping a cloudy cup of water laced with alkanolamides, Jello remnants, dead skin cells, various bodily fluids, as well as gosh-only-knows what else. Bathwater. It's repulsive. But my tots guzzle it at every opportunity, despite my attempts to gross them out by describing exactly what's in it.
Parents magazine interviewed a bunch of experts to try and explain this and other weird toddler phenomenon in the February 2009 issue, and I wanted to share some highlights:
Drinking bathwater
To your toddler, it's like she's at a big tea party and she's sitting in the teapot. Yes, it's icky and you should discourage it, but it's unlikely she'll get sick.
Taking off his clothes -- anytime, anywhere
Toddlers don't know the meaning of modesty yet. Being able to disrobe is a source of pride, and he might do it to seize control.
Shoving everything in her nose or ear
Your little girl has discovered she has this body, it's all hers, and it's fascinating. Inserting beads, peas and rocks into it is part of exploration.
Tossing a present aside and playing with the box
The toy is nice, and he'll play with it later, but just look at that box! It's overflowing with possibilities: He can climb into it, wear it as a hat, pretend it's a house, and there's no adult telling him what to do with it.
Eating something one minute; refusing it the next
When your daughter says she doesn't like it, she may mean she just doesn't want it right now. No one craves the same food all the time, but she does not know how to communicate that yet.

Def the bathwater thing. And the food thing....haha
eww my toddler drinks bath water too, its so gross!!
but lately her behavior that has us baffled is she is so particular - almost OCD - about so many things. if you don't do something in the right order or the right way it can turn into a meltdown.
but on a good note she is napping again after a 3 month hiatus!
I started my kids with showers from the start, first in the bath/sink with a shower nozzle and now in the tub with the shower attachment, baths gross me out, lol..and with twins it is so much easier and less mess in the bathroom to just hose them off
The bath water thing is a definate thing that my son does and its gross but their is no stopping him one time he drank the bath water and started coughing from it and threw up right in the bath tub so thats when showers got started to stop him from making him self sick
I agree, its disgusting........I always freshen the water up when shes in there. uggg, esp. when her and one of her siblings are in there too!! lol
yes, I am in the wonderful 3's and its tough times on my ship!!!
my 18 month old grandson shoves his whole hand down his throat and gags himself and then giggles............and he also bumps his forehead against things when he is tired on purpose............and he used to bump his head on ppls boobies when he was still nursing a few months ago when he was hungry..........LOL
LOL - my son had his bath last night and it was the first in a long while that he started to drink the water again. But we set down one rule when this started - he may drink it only BEFORE any soap goes in. I figured that if he's going to drink it, at least try to drink it "clean"! He's pretty good about following it, too. Once it gets soapy, then he's allowed to "pretend drink" it only.
def. the bath water thing who knows why!!! its gross and crazy :)
agent brez- my oldest daughter for about a yr and a half no matter where we were had this OCD thing she would see an open door and have to shut it, she would do this at anyones house also at places like the mall if the dressing room door was left open by the previous person she would take off running and have to go and shut it. ultimatly she grew out of it and now its one of those stories I can't wait to tell her boyfriends
my dd has had a fascination w/ drinking her bathwater for 2 months now! I was a little worried about it, and stopped putting bubbles in :) I guess she will do it as long as she will!
