Jennifer Garner Teaches Her Son the Right Way to Talk About His Private Parts

jennifer garnerThe always-adorable Jennifer Garner was on The Tonight Show recently, and she explained that her husband, a little actor you may have heard of named Ben Affleck, explained to their 2-year-old son, Samuel, what his "bits" were. "[Ben]’s so psyched to finally have a boy. He loves his girls, but he’s serious about his son right now. So he taught him about his bits. He taught him about his P and two N’s."

Only that's not what Ben referred to them as.

Garner continued, "Now every time we pass a dog who’s walking on the street, or if we’re at a zoo or something, our poor little son is crouching down, looking up, and he’s like, ‘Mama, does that have a vagina or a penis and two nuts?" And she added, "Sometimes Sam will look at me, and he’ll say, 'But Mama calls them testicles.'"

Now, adorable story about children being their wildly inappropriate selves aside, is anyone else in love with the fact that Ben and Jen have taught their kids the proper words for their anatomy as opposed to giving them cutesy names? Down with hoo-ha and pee-pee! All hail vagina and penis!

Ever since my daughter was an infant (she's 2 now), my husband and I referred to her vagina as a vagina. There was no wee-wee; no pishy; no girly parts; it was always just vagina. Because that's what it is. It isn't funny; it isn't dirty. It's a body part. Truth be told, this was never something my husband and I even discussed. We just called it a vagina from the get-go and didn't think twice.

I, of course, am fully aware that other parents choose to go a different route, and to each their own, but I'm just a little confused as to ... why? A child is going to learn the proper word for their anatomy at some point. What's the sense in delaying it? Also, would you rather they learn it from you as opposed to a health teacher, or a friend, or the television?

After all, it isn't a bad word, it's just what it really is called.

What do you refer to your child's penis or vagina as?
