Lying Mom Tells Her Healthy 4-Year-Old Daughter She Has Cancer

Twisted 66

Ugh, yet another mother pretending her kid has cancer for money and attention. Abreail "Abby" Winkler was arrested after accepting around $3,000 in donations for her 4-year-old daughter -- who was supposedly fighting leukemia. Only, you know, she was perfectly healthy. Ugh, we've heard this tale before. This one is a little different though. Not only did the mom tell her daughter she had cancer -- nice thing to tell your little girl -- but the little girl, despite not having anything wrong with her, began exhibiting signs of cancer! Yeah, the mom had the kid so freaking convinced she had cancer that she began losing her hair and showing other signs of illness. Sick!!!

Winkler admitted that she had begun telling her ex-husband that their daughter had cancer in order to get his attention. Pathetic enough! (No wonder they are divorced.) But even worse is that she told her daughter the same thing.

Then she says the whole thing got "out of control" when sympathetic neighbors heard the tale and began collecting money for her. Naturally, she did not refuse to take it.

Luckily, someone caught on and reported the mom. And then the police had to talk to a little girl who thought she had cancer! Said detective Shaun Smith:

We interviewed the child, and up until a couple days prior to us interviewing her, she still at that point believed that she had cancer. At this point, she knows that she does not and appears to be coping with it well.

The f-ed up thing is that neighbors said that the child had begun showing signs of illness, including losing clumps of hair. Even though police believe the mom did nothing to make her daughter sick -- except tell her she was sick.

We all know the power of the mind. You really can convince yourself you are sick and exhibit physical symptoms. Apparently it can even happen to a 4-year-old.

The little girl now lives with her dad, Derick, who says, "She's loving life and getting into preschool. And she doesn't have dark circles under her eyes anymore."

Yeah, living with that mom would cause anyone to have dark circles under their eyes.

Let this be a lesson to moms about the power of suggestion.

Has your child ever seemed sick when she wasn't?

Looking over at my 4 yr old right happy and full of life, I could never imagine having to tell him something so horrible. And to know that she hurt her daughter on purpose makes me sick to my stomach. Maybe karma will come around and this "mom" will get cancer.

This happened in the town I'm from....this woman is sick. Vernal is a small supportive community and she took advantage of so many people who were only trying to help.

I feel for her daughter who has such a crappy mom.

She is such bitch for during that to her child. I hope she loses her rights to her daughter.

This sucks because with all of these fraudalent charity cases occuring, people with real illnesses are going to be looked at as fakes and liars.

that's so sad! As a mother, with a mother starting chemotherapy for a rare and agressive form of ovarian cancer i have NO IDEA why anyone would wish this upon ANYONE. Any type of cancer, or a loved one going through chemotherapy. So heartbreaking. Cancer is so nothing to lie about or joke about. Terrible mother. Absolutely terrible.

hair loss can also be caused by extreme emotional stress, which i imagine this girl has been under. i find it hard to believe that a 4 yr old would even know what cancer is or that hair loss is a side effect of cancer treatments. for this to be psychosomatic would mean this mother told her child she had a serious, possibly fatal disease, that makes her hair fall out. how could she do this?! unreal. i agree that since this child has been involved in her mother's scheme, that she might not be able to sleep very well, which could account for the dark circles. these symptoms may have drawn enough attention to save her life. whoever caught on & reported her may have also saved her life. who knows what this person is capable of, & we all (i think) know about munchausen syndrome. i can't believe a mother could do this. if this is sickness, she needs help. major help. i wonder if the child would be better off w/ her dad. prayers & good vibes go out to this whole family.

Ashley01, As heartbreaking and sick as this is please don't wish "cancer" on anyone, ever. I am fighting a very rare, very aggressive Stage IV Sarcoma (cancer of the soft muscle tissue) And as I do understand how you feel this is a pathetic act of nastiness, to wish a terminal illness one someone else is horrifying to me. Personally, I hope she finds redemption and seeks help and I am happy that the young child is thriving with her father.

How can a mom do that to a precious little girl cuz mom was greed of money.

@Homeschoolmom99 - it's called "Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy", where a caregiver projects an "illness" upon someone that they are in care of (most often either a child or an elderly parent), in order to either elicit sympathy from others, or to play the "hero" by somehow magically "curing" the ailment.
