Medical Marijuana for Kids -- Not as Crazy as It Sounds (VIDEO)

marijuana plantAdults have been using medical marijuana for ages. But is it safe for kids? Growing numbers of parents are giving their kids medical marijuana to treat symptoms like epilepsy, autism, cancer, and more. NBC recently profiled a family who gave their son marijuana after trying 17 other medications to treat his seizures. The marijuana worked. But that's just one instance. Do we know enough about marijuana's effects on kids to experiment with it?

The American Academy of Pediatrics clutches its stethoscope and says heavens, no! We need more clinical trials to make sure it's really safe for kids. The organization is especially concerned about marijuana's long-term effects on kids. Sure they're okay now, but THC can linger in the body for years. And we don't know what the impact marijuana can have on kids' growing brains.

But when it comes to medical marijuana, we're not even talking about the same stuff you (one?) use to party. Some growers are breeding a variety of marijuana with low levels of TCH and higher levels of cannabidiol, or CBD. You won't get high off of this pot. However, the CBD is very similar to a chemical produced in the brain called endocannabinoids that tell brain cells to calm down and can balance brain activity.

So we've got one side saying we need to learn more -- and we've got another side saying it's helping their kids a lot. I think we should look into the use of medical marijuana more closely. More clinical trials ... oh, but that would take money. Which means I guess we have to wait until pharmaceutical companies become interested in growing weed. Which -- can you imagine that ever happening? Maybe. I think there's so much growing interest, they probably should look into it.

Until then, people are going to keep experimenting. And I think the medical community needs to get ahead of this trend so they can provide guidance. I don't think telling desperate parents to "just say no" is going to work.

Do you think medical marijuana for kids is a good idea?

Well we know marijuana is bad for adults, so I can't say I would give it to my kids -except in the case of cancer. It really does help patients with cancer, MS, and a few other diseases. It doesn't do anything to autistic or ADD/ADHD kids except turn them into zombies. If you want zombie kids that is the way to go, as other zombie-ifying medications have far worse side effects.

I want to get it for one of my dogs. He is ancient and has glaucoma. I think his quality of life would be greatly improved with marijuana.

For one THCdoes not stay in your system for years. Secondly marijuana has been used medicinally for hundreds possibly thousands of years, the only reason drug companies haven't commercialized it is because its not exactly something you can corner the market on when people can grow it in their back yards. In case you didn't know big drug companies like to over charge for their products just look at how Pfizer if fighting with India. Thirdly research exists unfortunately when it comes to marijuana American seems to only except its own research finding which is limited to near nothing since the only legal marijuana to study comes from government farm in Alabama which is rarely distributed for any research especially if its not studying harmful effects. And when an American does do a study it is disregarded.

The amount of misinformation that surrounds the use of this plant is sad. For ten years I struggled with chronic pain that my doctors could neither fix, nor eleviate. I was handed bottle after bottle of chemically altered opiates that exhausted me, made me live in a fog, and forced me to put myself through withdrawl from the medication once month. It was miserable. Imagine having the flu once a month! My husband begged me to see a Dr. about medical cannabis (it is legal in California). It took him a decade to convince me, but I gave in. My life changed in so many ways for the better. I took a pill twice a day. My pain became managable, I was able to get pregnant,  I had energy again, and my life was so much better. I was never "high".

This medicine should be respected, researched, and considered as a honest option for those who are suffering. It feels like a miracle medicine to me, and I bet it does to others as well.

I thought they just came out with a study that found marijuana ues in young people (teens) leads to more mental illiness in adulthood.

If my one of my children was terribly ill and we were unable to find a way to manage the pain with "traditional" medicine, I wouldn't think twice about trying medical marijuana.  For those that want to argue that the long term side effects are unknown, I'd argue that the same is true for some of the "traditional" treatments.  Not every medication has been on the market and in use for decades.  Some of it's brand new and you have no idea what long term side effects may happen from those.

Common.Sense: SOME drugs are bad.  Herion?  Yes.  Meth?  Yes.  Weed?  I know a lot of people that smoke weed and have for 15+ years.  Not ONE of them has done a horrible thing to someone else while they were high.  Except for that one time my stoned friend stole my other stoned friends Doritos.  That was a really dangerous situation!

The main problem is the kind that hasn't been genetically altered to have lower levels of THC... right until you run into the problem of GM marijuana. That's just a really crappy idea right there.

Other -known- side effects include damage to the central nervous system, heart problems, blood pressure problems, lung problems, dizziness, extreme stupidity, hallucinations (oh yes it can, it really can!), depression, anxiety, weakened immune system, and panic attacks. If taken (smoked or orally ingested) during pregnancy it can slow the development of the fetus and cause childhood leukemia. That's just what we know it does. New studies are linking it to increased mental illness and increased likelihood of Alzheimer's.

I'm not saying there aren't benefits to it, but that doesn't mean that it's a good idea -especially for children. We know marijuana affects brain development. I was offered medical marijuana by several doctors and refused it. I know what it can do. I know that I might be out of pain and not suffering from continual weight loss if I had accepted it. I also know that I would likely be a very unfit mother if I had accepted it. Weed causes irresponsibility above all things.

The only study to even "demonstrates" brain cell death related to pot somking was on monkeys that were forced to inhale the smoke from 30-joint in a 5 minute-period through a maks. It was later concluded that the brain cell death was linked to lack of oxygen, not the pot itself. I believe that properly dosed and controlled, marijuana has the potential to be of great help to people who suffer from a variety of conditions. Morphine is way more addictive and destructive in the long run than marijuana is. But pain and seizure are worse for brain development than pot ever will be...

Wow didn't know all you pot haters were doctors and have studied the affects of medical marijuana......Chocodoxies you and i for once agree! I am glad it has helped you with your pain. I watched my mother addicted to oxycottin for years.....that shit is bad not pot! Pot is natural and it has been around longer then any of us. And how to people who smoke pot harm other people?? Drinking makes people mean and do stupid shit. Have you really ever seen a pot head mean??? no they are mellow. So yes DRUGS are bad....thank goodness pot isn't a drug!!
