We've seen cases before in which restaurants have banned kids, because they don't want to be bothered with their assumedly bad behavior. That's one thing, but in Alexandria, Virginia, The Sushi Bar, is banning kids under 18 for the most unbelievable reason. It's so condescending and ridiculous it should have parents everywhere fuming.
It's not because they want a quiet atmosphere (and just assume all kids will ruin that) or because they've had some bad experiences with children there (they just opened), but because they say helicopter parents need a break. I'm not kidding.
The owner, Mike Anderson, told TODAY.com:
We thought, ‘These poor parents—they’re helicopter parents, God love ’em—they’re always doing this and that with their kids, and we thought, they need a break.’ Not so much a break from their kids, but adjoining kids.
So he's just doing us a favor? Please. I don't deny that parents need a break. Lord knows we do, but what we don't need is judgy restaurant owners deciding how and where we'll get one. And doesn't he know, helicopter parents rarely can stop hovering to leave their kids with a babysitter?

It's such a ridiculous attempt to try and rationalize the restaurant's choice, and it's flat out insulting. If they don't want kids there messing up their swanky scene fine, just say it and own it. There are plenty of people who strongly support adult-only restaurants. I'm not one of them, as I think that kids should be innocent until proven bratty or disruptive. But to try and disguise their policy with a bunch of condescending crap about doing what's best for poor parents -- spare us.
What do you think of the reason this restaurant is giving for banning kids?
