5 Family Videos I'm Insanely Grateful to Have (VIDEOS)

by Linda Sharps on November 13, 2012 at 8:00 AM

A few months ago, my brother-in-law emailed around a video of his baby's first steps. Oh, how it took me back -- that wobbling, arms-wide stance; the delighted pre-verbal chirrups; those pudgy, dimpled knees. Seeing my nephew take his first strides towards toddling mobility sent me straight to my own computer archives so I could revisit that same milestone when it happened in our house.

Thank god for video. I am so glad I have something more than my own treacherous memory to help me revisit some of the moments from my boys' infanthood. I took a hundred thousand photos, I wrote a million words, but nothing takes me back like video. Even a short, low-quality clip sends me straight back in time in a way no other medium can.

And although I dearly love (and in many ways, prefer) the bigger boys they are now, I've never once been able to watch a years-old video of them without weeping. I'm so incredibly thankful for these little digital glimpses into our past, and I thought I'd share a few of my favorites with you.

My youngest son's first steps:

A hectic stop-motion video that captured a typical evening in our life in January of 2009:

Here's what I wrote when I posted the following video: I don't have any brothers or sisters, and the childhood I had is the only one I can truly picture with any sort of clarity. I can't imagine having siblings, because that wasn't my experience. I don't have any memories of feeling sad that I was an only child, if anything I'm sure I reveled in my grandparents' laser-beam-like affections and the fact that I didn't have to share my Cabbage Patch Kids with anyone. I had books to read and my beleaguered Burmese cat Smokey to pester and friends to roller skate with and Breyer horses to endlessly arrange and re-arrange; I never sat around thinking, man, if only I had a brother or sister to play with. It is only now, at 35 years old, that I feel as though I may have missed out on something. Because of these guys.

Lastly, a video montage I put together when my first son was a year old. I usually start sobbing like a giant wiener at the 1:34 mark.

Do you have any all-time favorite family videos? Tell me about them!

How sweet! I didn't get my son's first steps because we weren't home, but I did get him rolling for the first time, his first bath, his first baby food, a lot of other good stuff!

These are great videos. I love the grumpy toddler video. I wish I had more videos of my son when he was so young. I have one that I love of Evan singing the alphabet song and playing in our backyard that always get me choked up. It is those little kid's voices that are just so sweet.
