Your Toddler Put WHAT In His Mouth?!

by Michele Zipp on July 8, 2012 at 10:00 AM

toddler eating flowerSome kids like to put everything in their mouth. The other day my daughter was licking the window screen and said it was delicious. My son enjoys rock tasting. The ones he really likes he carries around with him. And he also has one car he plays with that also apparently tastes as good as candy. And we're not even going to get into boogers.

Oh how I wish my kids would get over this phase. I know I'm not alone. I got the scoop from other parents on the crazy things their kids put in their mouths ... and some you won't believe. Well, maybe you can if you have a toddler, too.

One 2-year-old was playing in the dirt when his dad noticed him chewing something so he went over to him and noticed he had one beetle in his hand and what looked like some remains of another in his mouth.

This is embarrassing but when I was just a wee one, it's believed that I ate some doggie poop. I went up to my parents with a little log of puppy yuck in my hand and a questionable smear on my face. Ilk.

They seem to find everything on the floor, even things you can't see as one mom realized when he daughter came to her with a wet aspirin that apparently had fallen out of sight. She put it in her mouth to eat it, didn't like the taste, so gave it to mom. Thank goodness.

Barrettes look real pretty in little girls' hair but not so pretty when they poop them out. One mom told me how her daughter ate her hair clip -- metal and all -- and when they rushed her to the hospital, they were told all was fine and it didn't damage anything inside. They just had to wait until it passes through. It did. An agonizing week later.

Be careful when you are sweeping because one dad shared that his son actually picked up a dust bunny and devoured it.

Has your kid eaten anything crazy lately?

With my oldest, she was pretty good about not putting things in her mouth but my little one, now 1 picks up every thing and anything. I am pretty good about cleaning out his high chair, but I guess I missed something, because I had to fish out a small piece of old hamburger.yuk

My special needs son told me last Summer, "Ants are yummy!" he always says goofy things, so I just laughed and he kept repeating it that day to make me laugh again... That night I discovered some little sugar ants in his bedroom and he said, "See Mommy? Is YUMMY!" he'd been eating them!! Eeeewwwww!!!!

My son has picked up dog poop from the yard more than once and tried to put it in his mouth! He got it in once, but I'm usually quick enough to catch him, yuk!!

My son just turned 6 and still chews on weird things. Paper, marbles, toys, I have even caught him on several occasions, eating the wood from our front porch rail and chewing on the back of the seat on the bus.

From ages 10-18 months, around the time she started walking and getting super independent...rocks, mulch, grass and dirt, hard wax from candles and crayons, wallpaper that she peeled off her nursery wall, paper, flower petals, houseplants. She also likes to lick balloons, mirrors, shoes, and my arms. So weird. Now that I know her favorites, like rocks and mulch, I can keep a super close eye on her, but in the past few months her appetite for bizarre objects has decreased. Thank goodness!

What HAVEN'T my kids put in their mouths?! Between 4 kids, here's a short list of things they tried, and enjoyed:
    Moss off a rock
    Dirt off an EARTHWORM
The bottom of shoes... all 4 of them did this one
    Unknown poop at a park
    Grass
    Food from the trash
    Bugs
    Cigarette butts from the gutter
    The worst of all...
A used tampon from a guest in my house, that didn't know if I would want them flushed, was too embarassed to ask, and put it in the trash. OMFG I threw up twice.

Kids are disgusting creatures. If I could, I would put them in a hospital style "clean room" till they were 18

I swore my youngest had pica up until recently. Every single thing went into her mouth. She's the only one too that was like that. Glad she finally got over it!!
