I thought this story was shocking enough when I read that a pet piranha actually bit off the tip of a toddler's finger recently. I mean we always hear about the dangers of dogs and small children, but I never really stopped to consider the fish tank. Of course, most people don't put piranhas in the fish tank ... but that's another story.
This incident happened last week in Chicago, and an 18-month-old girl was the victim. According to the Chicago Tribune, when the family first saw the bleeding remains of their daughter's finger, they feared it was their dog, a 65-pound pit bull, that was responsible. But after an ambulance whisked her to the hospital, doctors told them it was no dog bite.
The father -- who was still at home -- quickly realized what must have happened after the family called with the news, and then he did something really shocking.
He plunged his hand into that fish tank, grabbed one of the two piranhas, and gutted the thing. A spokesperson for the sheriff's department told the paper:
He had no fear; these were truly fatherly instincts. He grabbed a knife and cut it open and found her fingertip right there.
He took the fingertip to the hospital where they tried to reattach it. It's unclear whether it worked or not, but that's a pretty intense dad demonstration of love regardless.
I would hope I could do the same, but I'm not sure. Of course, I'd never keep piranhas in my house either, which sounds like a pretty bad idea from the get go with small children around. I'm thinking maybe a nice new goldfish should perhaps be their next pet.
Do you think you'd be able to do what this dad did? Do you think it's irresponsible to have piranhas as pets if you have small children?

My issue is of course the Pitbull got blamed and tgey didnt think the kid might figure out how to get to where she could play with the fishy. and how about a locking top on the tank.
Wow that is truly fatherly instinct, what would you have done? I would have probably done the same thing.

Honestly pit bulls are like any other dog...If they are raised in a good caring home not by gang bangers trying to dog fight them or to protect the guys drugs they're the most loving and loyal dogs you could ever own. I'm questioning the whole keeping PIRANHA'S as a pet thing far more than the pit bull! Seriously the fuck? They can strip a cow in something like a minute or less. Yah that's something I want in my house toddler or not!
Well, Julie, it looks like if you truly wanted this discussion to be about the fish, maybe you should have just let the "pit bull" part read "dog". Or would reporting like that have been too sloppy?
I wish they owned a yorkie. Yep, sarcasm...
I think you'd suspect the dog (any dog) over the fish, or assume that she got her finger stuck and tore it off, which I have heard of happening. A good friend of mine lost her ring finger in the wheel of an exercise bike at about that age.
I am terrified of piranhas so this won't ever be a problem for me but I don't know that I could do what the dad did. So glad he was quick thinking!!
Not only do I think it's beyond nuts to have two piranha's. Plus, to add to it a 65 pound pit bull. They should be up for stupid parents of the year! I think all of them should be removed from the home. Would I have the courage to do what he did, only if I took a knife and killed the damn fish before taking it out of the tank. I don't understand stupid people!
