So, my family and I survived the 16-hour trip from Baltimore to Disney World. Not only did we survive it, we had an absolute blast. It was as close to perfect as a trip with three young kids could possibly be. Hallelujah! But, that's not to say our trips have always been so successful. We've had stomach bugs, flat tires, and ear infections plague many a family trip. Thankfully, just not this one! It seems like, more often than not, family trips aren't all they're cracked up to be.
Forgetting your last one? Check out these confessions from the Scary Mommy Confessional on family vacations. And, plan a solo trip with your spouse ...
1. "The last time we took a family vacation, we ended up coming home three days early because I was so sick of my kids."
2. "My best friend chastised me when we bought an SUV with a DVD player. She just took her first trip without one with her family and I sang 'I told you so' for the whole week after."
3. "We spent our last family vacation at the ER with my son. I felt horrible that his ears were in pain, but more so, I resented that I was missing the beach."
4. "I've put potty-trained kids in a Pamper just to avoid the stop and promised candy to them if they agree to actually pee in it."
5. "My kids wear the same two outfits for a week-long vacation so I don't come home to suitcases full of laundry."
6. "If my son asks, 'Are we there yet?' one more time, I swear I’m going to knock him out."
7. "My son and I were kicked off an airplane once because he was so out of control. I lied to my family and said the flight was cancelled."
8. "Our best friends invited us to their beach house for a week. The idea of being around their kids 24/7 is actually worse than being home alone with mine."
9. "I get 6 weeks paid vacation, but told my husband I only have 3. The idea of 6 weeks with the family? Unthinkable."
10. "My kids have never been on vacation with my husband and me. They must think the world ends with Texas."

last year we went on a family vacation... full family. my parents, the 4 of us and my bro and his 2 girls. my boys, ages almost 3 and 6, were amazing! they loved the plane ride. my youngest thought it was a ride like the ones at disney. we spent the entire week at disney, and they were so well behaved, i kept checking to see that we didn't at somepoint get different kids.
BUT
i would give anything (almost) to go back to disney with just my hubby and no kids. they tire easily and early. and getting them out of vacation mode was a challenge. i would reallyjust like to be selfish just once and enjoy a trip with my hubby to my favorite place in the world!!
i know bad mom!!
wow.. my kids are good travelers then... ... i have a 2yr old a 4yr old and a 3m old... my oldest has been to cali 3 times, all road trips there and back, and my 2 yr old has been to cali twice also road trip there and back.. a 21hr rd trip from ks to cali and not one problem and i have never once thought of any of the confessions above....
My son is 4.5 and has been on many plane rides and road trips. He has always done well, and we would rather him be with us than leave him home!!! I think vacations are stressful for moms, but still alot of fun!
As a single mom, my 5yo has been my traveling companion since she was two weeks old, we've been to Disney, Virginia Beach (2x), Sesame Place, North Carolina, we just got back from Burlington Vermont, and going to Tampa at the end of May, back to Virginia Beach in July, Boston in August. I do have a DVD player in the car, also lots of snacks, her coloring books and games, anything to make the trip a little easier. I also bought a portable potty from one step ahead, and is a lifesaver when we can't find a bathroom really fast :-) she has her moments she is 5 after all, but she actually does pretty good on road trips, I just tell her that if she doesn't behave we'll just stop going places. I do have to go to a job conference once a year, and I have no choice but to leave her with my mom for week, which she enjoys because is grandma :-)
Lisa: I agree!!! you stole the words from my mouth
My boy travels very well, poor thing has been flying since he was 5 weeks. And living in Germany everything that's interesting (from where we live) is anywhere from 40 minutes to 3.5 hours away. We don't have a DVD player, and the boy doesnt seem to mind, actually during our 2.5 hour drive last week I tried showing him a movie and he cried until I turned it off.
He rather stare out the window. :) he is a great travel buddy!!!
I love family trips. I do end up more tired after the trip usually because they are a lot of work with the kids but to me it is worth it for the memories.
Those are funny!
We are going to go camping with our 4 year old son this summer, that should be interesting!
