So, my family and I survived the 16-hour trip from Baltimore to Disney World. Not only did we survive it, we had an absolute blast. It was as close to perfect as a trip with three young kids could possibly be. Hallelujah! But, that's not to say our trips have always been so successful. We've had stomach bugs, flat tires, and ear infections plague many a family trip. Thankfully, just not this one! It seems like, more often than not, family trips aren't all they're cracked up to be.
Forgetting your last one? Check out these confessions from the Scary Mommy Confessional on family vacations. And, plan a solo trip with your spouse ...
1. "The last time we took a family vacation, we ended up coming home three days early because I was so sick of my kids."
2. "My best friend chastised me when we bought an SUV with a DVD player. She just took her first trip without one with her family and I sang 'I told you so' for the whole week after."
3. "We spent our last family vacation at the ER with my son. I felt horrible that his ears were in pain, but more so, I resented that I was missing the beach."
4. "I've put potty-trained kids in a Pamper just to avoid the stop and promised candy to them if they agree to actually pee in it."
5. "My kids wear the same two outfits for a week-long vacation so I don't come home to suitcases full of laundry."
6. "If my son asks, 'Are we there yet?' one more time, I swear I’m going to knock him out."
7. "My son and I were kicked off an airplane once because he was so out of control. I lied to my family and said the flight was cancelled."
8. "Our best friends invited us to their beach house for a week. The idea of being around their kids 24/7 is actually worse than being home alone with mine."
9. "I get 6 weeks paid vacation, but told my husband I only have 3. The idea of 6 weeks with the family? Unthinkable."
10. "My kids have never been on vacation with my husband and me. They must think the world ends with Texas."

My daughter has been going on trips with us since she was 3 weeks old! We went to the Deschutes River for some white water rafting when she was 3 weeks old (I stayed on shore with her since I was only 3 weeks post-C-section and doc advised against) and that was about a 5 hour drive. We have gone to the Oregon coast every summer for last 3 years. We have never taken her on a plane and probably won't, just because that is not how we choose to travel. We are a road trip family and love it!
I think a dvd player is a good idea in the car if it's a long trip just because it gives something else to do to pass the time. As others have said, you just have to be realistic. Kids act up at home, they are going to act up in the car and on vacation, too. You can't go in to a vacation thinking that just because it's vacation, magically everyone is going to have perfect behavior. I can't imagine not having our kids with us on vacation. They bring us so much joy and I want them there to experience everything with us. Heck, most of the time, we are planning vacations based on things our children would enjoy! I want more than anything to plan a trip to Disney World!!
I think some of the comments are being missinterpreted. People are not saying they hate their kids or do not enjoy spending time with them, but there is always that one trip that was no fun. Many families are lucky to be 'travel apt", but for others, there are bumps on the road to fun. Some kids enjoy long trips, others don't. This article is about the not so easy travel situations.
Our DD (she's 4) is so much fun to vacation with, she's a great traveler and fantastically polite while out in public. I couldn't imagine being apart from her, let alone traveling with out her. We've only had her start having a melt down in a store once, she was starting to come down with a cold and it had just begun to hit her while we were there. All I had to do was hold her and say quietly "Oh hunny, I'm sorry your feeling upset. But we cannot be loud or cry like this while in the store. We will be asked to leave. So I'm going to need you to calm down, I'll help you with that if you need" Other than that, its been smooth sailing for us <3
Last Easter my son was 15 months old, we took a 12 hour drive to NC from FL. He did awesome!! but that was probably because at 8 months old we took the same trip lol. Now we go on 2 hour trips to see family every couple months or so. He does so good riding in the car. He gets a few toys to play with and his blanket and he is good to go and every so often we change out toys and we take our time at rest stops to let him get out and run for a while. He is 2 now and we are planning on a 6 hour drive to GA for Memorial day and totally looking forward to it! I love trips with my lil man! :)
So next month daughter and I are taking another cruise, hubby is staying home,we are doing a Disney cruise, Lord help me survive this! !
