New Vegan Book for Kids Brings Out the Haters

vegan book for kidsOh, vegans. I do admire you so and honestly wish I could do what you're doing. So much so that on occasion, I give it a shot. Admittedly, I just polished off a breakfast of bacon and eggs, but I do have much love for you and your kind. Except for the judge-y ones. You people can suck it.

Which is how most of you guys are going to feel about Ruby Roth's upcoming children's book, Vegan Is Love, I just know it. And Ms. Roth does herself no favors in this TODAY show interview where she comes off as just a wee bit sanctimonious.

I take no issue with the statements made in Vegan Is Love. I don't think we can argue the fact that animals do, in fact, die when they are prepped for our dinner table. And any death that is not natural and at the hands of a weapon is surely violent. I don't even think some kids will blink an eye at this information. After all, it's much more difficult to explain the opposite to a child -- that we kill and eat animals by choice.

So how come this book is bugging me and will surely bug many of you?

It could be my own waffling on the issue and therefore guilt seeping in that I enjoy burgers against my better judgment. But it's also that this book feels condescending to parents making different choices than the author. And we don't need any more of that. So the best thing to do is to leave this book to the vegan families and ignore those cute animals staring out at us from the book shelves.

Who am I kidding? This thing is going to sell a million copies, mostly to people who want to use it to light up their grill.

What do you think about teaching kids to be vegans?

Eating animals is NOT wrong. Common people...we as humans are everything eaters and that's what some of us do. We are on top of the food chain therefore we can eat whatever we want in moderation of course, so there is enough for everyone....If you don't want to eat meat don't, but don't create philosophy for it

Children should be taught WHERE FOOD COMES FROM. Adults who DON'T KNOW this INFORMATION about their foods, should also learn WHERE THEIR FOOD COMES FROM. It is the gap(s) between farm and table that has become so much of an issue in our society today. If you eat meat, THINK AND KNOW where that animal came from, how it was treated while it was alive, where it lived, what IT ATE (because that's what you WILL BE EATING), and how it was killed and processed. Also look beyond "MEAT OR NO MEAT" and into REAL NUTRITIONAL HEALTH. There is no diet that is right for EVERYONE, but EVERYONE should EAT VEGETABLES AND FRUIT. THINK HEALTHY, NOT CONVENIENCE or CRAVING.

I wish I had the will power to be vegan. I haven't found it yet, however I don't judge people who eat meat either. I don't understand why this would offend anyone. I mean if your kids not vegan, don't buy it. If your child is vegan, then they can relate and its a great book to have around because its something your child can relate to.

Ignorance is bliss, right? You say you enjoy burgers against your better judgement. So why don't you seek out a non-animal alternative? I don't think it's ok to teach your children that even though you know something is wrong, you should just turn your back and it'll disappear.

Meghan Plumberg Liller, you obviously don't know a thing about nutrition. What does your child get from meat that a vegan can't? And how dare you say that because my kids are vegan I am a child abuser. They eat a very well balanced, nutritionally complete diet and are both in the top 90th percentile for growth for their ages.

Why should I feel bad about eating meet?  It's as natural as a lion eating a deer.  Is that lion bad, too?  Whatever.

Very simple: I do not have to kill to live. Van Epp

There is no such thing has a Vegan or Vegetarian, everyone has a craving for meat, whether they admit or not! If Vegans didn't have a craving for meat, then why eat a Veggie Hamburger, why make it taste somewhat like meat or even resemble meat? A true Vegan would eat nothing that tastes or resemble meat whatsoever!
