The Horrifying Dangers of Letting Your Kid Watch TV

April Peveteaux

television study for toddlersIs your toddler having trouble sleeping? Are you letting him watch Saw right before bed? Well, there's your problem, silly! Yet another new study tells parents something very obvious -- watching violent television after 7 p.m. can make 3- to 5-year-olds not sleep very well. Hell, watching The Killing before bed makes me not sleep very well.

Of course the study also says that watching any TV after 7 p.m. is disruptive to sleep. So that's the real nugget for those of us who occasionally want a moment to talk to our spouse without being constantly interrupted before the kids go to bed. It's good to know that turning on The Backyardigans for some QT with the husband could backfire on us when our 2-year-old cries for "Mama's bed" in the middle of the night. And that's a lot more scary even than some of The Backyardigans dance numbers.

One more horrifying part of this study?

Experts say that it's not good for toddlers to have a television in their room. Ummm, I don't even have a television in my bedroom, so my children aren't getting their own flat screen. That's nuts! Not to mention a quick trip to childhood obesity. Do lots of parents actually do this? I can understand when kids get older and you really can't agree on MTV vs. History, but at this young age, it just does not seem like a great idea. However, some parents apparently think having a television in their toddler's room helps them sleep better. Turns out, it totally doesn't.

Okay. Lessons learned: No TVs in the nursery, and no torture porn after 7 p.m. for the little ones.

Please tell me none of you moms actually allow this. Do you?
