Beginning today and lasting through April 30, organizations like awareness month founder the Autism Society will be trying to shed light on the one in every 110 American children who have autism.
Americans have been honoring autistic kids and their families this way since the '70s, and as the numbers of kids being diagnosed grows, so does the importance of increasing awareness.
Want to help? Now's the time to do it.
Donate your time:
Join a "bounce team," and you can help raise money for the Autism Society via the Bounce for Autism national fundraising program.
Plan a fundraising walk or join a team to walk to raise money for Autism Speaks. They happen all year long around the states, so even if you can't throw one together in a few weeks, you can get the ball rolling this month.
Donate your dollars:
A straight donation to Autism Speaks will fund autism research, awareness, advocacy and family services.
You can become a member of the Autism Society for just $25 and receive a quarterly newsletter to keep you updated.
Donate your self as a marketing tool:
Buying an autism awareness bracelet or t-shirt from the Autism Society does two things for the cause -- puts money toward research and helping kids with autism but also helps amp up the awareness to make these kids' lives easier.
Spend a few moments getting educated (check out the CDC's guide to signs of autism) and lead informed discussions.
Wear blue on Friday, April 2, to celebrate Autism Awareness Day.
