It's never easy hearing about a child who has been fighting a grave illness. It's heartbreaking to think that at a time when they should be worrying about school dances, they have to deal with such a grown-up issue. Still, teens like Jayci Glover have a way of showing just how strong and inspiring they can be even while facing the scariest battle of their lives. Diagnosed with a rare form of terminal lymphoma, she was given a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and what she asked for will totally floor you.
Instead of using the wish for herself, she gave it to her high school so that it could get a new scoreboard. So the organization sent a check for $7,500 to the principal in Jayci's name. During the February 12 game, the basketball team wore t-shirts with "Fight Like Jayci" emblazoned on them.
In fact, the entire town has been touched by the 13-year-old, who endured chemotherapy and 40 rounds of radiation. When she returned to her tiny hometown of Kanab after treatment at Salt Lake City, there were crowds of people lined on the street waiting with signs to welcome her. Even celebs have been impacted by Jayci -- singer Jordin Sparks serenaded her on YouTube.
There is no doubt that she is a strong young woman and a selfless one too. I am sure there are a million things she could have asked for, but she wanted more people to benefit from that wish. What a generous gesture. This is a time we would actually expect a child to be a little selfish. In fact, when a child is so very sick, I think we should encourage them to be. It's okay if the world revolves around them for a bit, especially when you have no idea what tomorrow will bring.
As for Jayci, though she still needs treatment to stay alive, she and her family made the decision to take a break. After a year, they felt she deserved to have some fun. Now her family is hoping for the best. Said her mom Heather Glover, "Maybe you don't like what it's going to look like, but if you smile and move forward, there's hope and happiness ahead."
Do you think the school should have accepted Jayci's Make-A-Wish wish?
