Orphaned Teen Searching for Family Is Getting a Christmas Miracle

Jenny Erikson

Remember the 15-year-old Florida orphan that wrenched our hearts a couple of months ago with a plea to be adopted? Davion Only stood in the pulpit of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church and said, "My name is Davion and I've been in foster care since I was born," he says. "I know God hasn't given up on me. So I'm not giving up either."

He’s getting his wish. MailOnline reports that Davion will be spending Christmas with a loving foster family, after spending his entire life in care facilities. But wait! There’s more! He’s currently living with the prospective parents, so they can all get to know each other before they finalize the adoption.

Heart. Melted.

The teen was living at Eckerd’s Carlton Manor residential home in St. Petersburg with 12 other boys when he made his plea last October. The home was “immediately inundated with tens of thousands of calls and emails.”

At the time, Davion said, “I'm pretty happy and excited that people are calling and asking to talk to me and possibly be my family … I just want people to love me for who I am and to grab me and keep me in their house and love me no matter what.”

Davion has had trouble in school in the past, and has had some disciplinary issues. His case worker Connie Going said that he never wanted to be placed with a permanent family because he always held out hope that his crack addict mother would get cleaned up and come back for him.

This summer he used his birth certificate and a computer at the library to track her down, only to learn the devastating news that she had passed away just weeks before. Davion had a choice to make at that point: Get bitter or get better.

He chose to get better. Since learning his mom had died, he applied himself at school and is making straight A’s. He’s also started taking care of himself, and has lost 40 pounds.

This kid is awesome. Best of luck to him and his prospective family, but something tells me they’re going to be ok.

Would you consider adopting a teenager?
