It's been awhile since I was in high school, but I can still remember anxiously poring over the newly pressed yearbook to see if any pictures of me had made in. The yearbook tended to be full of pics of the kids and their friends who were on the yearbook committee -- which I was not -- so every year it was like I didn't exist. But my senior year I got a few pictures in and I remember being thrilled! Such is the high school mentality. These days, I don't even know where my dusty old yearbook is. So it must have been a major embarrassment when Raigan Mastain opened her yearbook to discover that her name had been altered to read Raigan Masturbate.
Another student, 17-year-old Kaitlyn Booth, has been arrested for the "prank" -- which isn't so much a prank as the act of an unfeeling bully. Booth is charged with first degree property damage -- which is a felony -- and harassment. Having a felony on her record will follow Booth through every job application. It's not something that's going to go away easily.
The prank meant that the school would have had to have paid $41,000 to reprint, so instead the school collected all 720 yearbooks and spent 12 hours putting stickers over the word "masturbate."
I don't know what could have caused Booth to want to humiliate a student in such a fashion, but high school -- and life after -- is full of mean girls such as this. She'll grow up to be the one in the office who makes your life hell.
That said, Raigan Mastain is really going places. Because just listen to how she dealt with the situation. She told the Columbia Daily Tribune:
I was kind of annoyed. It was stupid, but I wasn't that upset. When you're in high school, you do stuff that is not necessarily the smartest, and this was an example of that.
Wow, this sounds like a teen with quite a head on her shoulders. She seems to understand that changing her last name to something offensive and embarrassing isn't really going to make any serious difference in her life. She was even shocked that the other girl was arrested.
Not that Booth shouldn't be punished -- she should. I don't know about a felony, that's pretty harsh. We've all done stupid things when we were younger that I bet we're glad aren't following us around now. And who knows, maybe Booth won't end up being the sociopath in the office, but the mature woman who sincerely regrets her uncaring act. One can hope.
But Magain has maturity and wisdom beyond her years. I hope she ends up running for political office -- or being the boss of a big company. People would be lucky to have her around.
What would you have done? Do you think Booth should have been arrested?
