19-Year-Old Bombing Suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Is Just a Kid & His Brain Proves It (VIDEO)

This Just In 6

Dzhokhar TsarnaevHas anyone else noticed that more and more acts of horrific violence are being committed by especially young men? Boston Marathon bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is 19 years old. Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooter Adam Lanza was 20 years old. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, better known as the "Columbine killers," were 18. Lee Boyd Malvo, accomplice to the Beltway Sniper, was 17 when he helped to murder 10 people. At 24, Aurora Theater suspect James Eagan Holmes was slightly older at the time of his shooting, but still under 25 years of age -- the point at which the human brain is fully developed (a fact scientists only recently discovered).

Of course we can't blame crimes of this magnitude solely on the teenage brain, but the connection is too obvious to be ignored. What are we missing here? Not just as a society, but as parents?

According to Dr. Igor Galynker, director of the Family Center for Bipolar in the psychiatry department at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, it's a combination of factors that can lead to disaster. Attachment issues and insecurity make the immature brain especially vulnerable to influence, which is why, Galynker explains, "Very often, these are pairs of perpetrators, one dominant figure who has psychopathic tendencies and the other a dependent figure."

Dzhokhar and his 26-year-old brother Tamerlan certainly seem to fit this profile. Tamerlan is being painted as a strong-willed, influential religious extremist; Dzhokhar a laid-back college student with a reputation for smoking pot and hanging out. Even the suspects' mother says Tamerlan had a huge influence on Dzhokhar:

"They loved each other. What Tamerlan was said was law for Dzhokhar. That's how I raised them. What the elder brother says, the younger brother has to do. That is according to Islam."

Again, obviously we can't excuse these criminals because of their age and the company they chose to keep, but maybe going forward, we can start to pay a little bit more attention to troubled teenage boys. Again, not that they're ALL going to turn violent. But it can't hurt.

Do you think there's a connection between Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's age and his crime?

NO! I am so sick and tired of people blaming age for crimes. He needs to be put to death.

Hell no! Most 18-24 year olds do not perpetrate these heinous crimes! People need to stop making excuses for people's behavior. Age, video games, music, access to guns/ other weapons do not make you a killer! Yes, something is seriously wrong with his brain to think it's ok, but not enough to spare him. He needs to be put down like the rabid animal he is! No mercy, no 20 years on death row, no appeals, convict him, then take him straight away to be put down. America needs to take up a stance of no tolerence for acts of terrorism. If your a terrorist, you die, plain and simple. They have no regard for our lives, why should we show any for theirs?

So....what was the point of this article? To point out that these monsters brains were not fully developed because of their age? Who cares? These people will do what they want no matter what and I just hope they fry him and James Holmes.

I have boys, and boys that play sports, so was watching a Nova special on this same thing, about the same time all the concussion/brain injury findings were in the headlines.   One interesting part in it, was showing the programs that have somewhat of a success rate for early offenders, and also interviewing some of the school shooters  years later.  While I dont think this is an excuse, I think any research into prevention is valuable.

I'll buy that brain damage/defect like the Newtown kid can explain something horrific.    But not he's just 19!!     Where the hell is the influence of mommy and daddy and the REAL Islam?

Nineteen is old enough to consent to sex with someone three times your age,   enter into contracts,    go to war and VOTE,     i.e. be treated like an adult.   We need to change that if simple influence can turn their undeveloped brains  into killers.

Guys, it's true we need to accept that their brains weren't fully developed so, they can make stupid decisions like that. Tamerlan on the other hand his brain was fully developed so, we couldn't accept him. We should at least accept Dzhokhar his brain wasn't fully developed also, it says that in Islam he HAS to listen to the older brother, it isn't fair. I'm pretty sure Dzhokhar didn't want to do. Dzhokhar looks like a nice kid he wouldn't do such a thing, Tamerlan would.
