If there was any one specific moment during President Barack Obama's inauguration when the nation realized his daughters aren't little girls anymore, this was it. Sasha and Malia Obama hammed it up as the elder girl took shots of their goofy faces and hand signals with her cellphone. Yes, they're still kids, but the first daughters have entered a world that confuses parents everywhere.
Just what are teenagers trying to SAY with those hand signals on Facebook and Instagram? Should we be worried or is it all innocent fun? Maybe a little bit a both? The Stir asked a flesh and blood teenager to help us decode the teenage hand signals that crop up most often on social media, and while some of her answers sound like common sense, some others are pretty shocking.
Just wait until you see the not-so-innocent peace sign, and find out why the heck you're not supposed to look when kids touch the tip of their thumb to the tips of their other four fingers!
You'll be relieved to know some things haven't changed that much since you were a kid, but beware, a few of these are not exactly safe for work or little kids!
Checked out the signs? Which ones did you know already? Which ones surprised you?

This is the first slideshow I've attempted in months. THANK YOU for changing the format and having the pop-out "don't reload the entire page with every click" thing anymore. MUCH better!!
And most of these signs are OLD. That forehead-eat-the-fart thing? Did it when I was in grade school (I'm 43). Same with "L-oser" and the forefinger-thumb thing. About the only new one is "this".
I always laugh at the "hook em horns" sign whenever I see it (and I lived in Austin!).
My Brazilian friend was confused at the prevalence of it, because in many cultures, that gesture is a sign meaning "cuckold."
So lame. Parents need to be aware of the gang signs. The signs of the Bloods and Crips are used freely all over social media. Ruben Studdard threw them on Idol for weeks before anyone noticed. Kids play at using these signs on FB and IG and Twitter so they appear "down", but they could be putting themselves at risk, for if a real member of a rival gang sees it and assumes that kid is associated with the gang they are now a target.
