Daughter Auctions Her Virginity to Pay for Treatment for Sick Mom

by Ericka Sóuter on January 3, 2013 at 6:00 PM

brazilian teenLife is hard for Rebeca Bernardo. The Brazilian teen is so desperate for money, she has decided to auction off her virginity via a YouTube video to the highest bidder.

Before you judge the young girl too harshly, first understand why she is going to such drastic lengths for money. Rebeca's mother had a stroke and they need the cash to pay for the mounting medical bills. So far, there have been three bidders and the highest bid is ...

$35,000!

"I made up my mind right after my 18th birthday. That is when my mother suffered a stroke," she told CNN. The stroke left her mother bedridden, unable to even feed herself or go to the bathroom on her own. At first Rebeca tried to earn money the conventional way by selling cosmetics and as a waitress, but it just wasn't enough. Then, she was inspired by Catarina Migliorini, another Brazilian woman who auctioned off her virginity to help her impoverished village.

"There comes a time when you have to make decisions to get what you want. You have to be strong," she added. Indeed she does. Her decision has made her the subject of ridicule and hostility in her tiny town. When people first heard about it, they threw coins at her as she walked down the street. Though some neighbors understand her plight. As they explained, Rebeca's sister died years ago and she has never known her father, so she feels this is her only option for helping her mother. However, Rebeca's mother is still heartbroken over her plans to "prostitute" herself. But there is another way to look at this. A Brazilian TV network offered to pay the medical expenses if she called off the auction, but the TV deal fell through and the bidding is back on.

As parents, most of us would do just about anything to keep our children safe and cared for. Is it so wrong that this child wants to do that for her mother? I can't imagine being in her shoes and pray that I never am. Now Rebeca hopes to raise enough to help her mother and start a new life in another town. It's just sad she feels this is her only way to accomplish that.

Do you think what Rebeca is doing is wrong?

Well after this video get's around, there's no way she'll have to go through with this. Someone will donate the money. Still decent people in this world. I'm one of them, I just don't have the cash.

The sad part is, she won't be able to go back and undo this mistake. She will forever be known as a whore. Especially with her face plastered all over the media. And before you start accusing me of trying to slut shame her, look up the definition of whore....a person who sells their body for sex.

It is tragic that this girl would prostitute herself to the highest bidder. It's wrong. Wrong that she would sell herself, wrong that she believes that this is her last option. The previous poster is right in how she'll forever be known, the media attention and the ramifications could haunt her for years to come. I feel sorry for her, and I really hope it doesn't come to this.

You gotta do what you gotta do. It's amazing that this young girl would do something that most people believe is unspeakably awful to save her mothers life. I also pray that a decent person steps in to pay the bills. But before we judge this girl, we need to realize that she is willing to sacrifice herself to help her family.

It sucks but it's her choice. I rather be a whore and a slut than a virgin with a dead mom. Plus, sexuality and morality are not mutually inclusive or exclusive. This won't make her damaged goods since she is a human being and not an object, nor will it make her a bad person.

So sad.  I admire her courage, though.  Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Isn't that a form of prostitution? Which will get her arrested? I think she shouldn't be making this public...

It isn't legally prostitution because what she is selling is not sex but the rights to the consumption of a product (her virginity).
