Life is hard for Rebeca Bernardo. The Brazilian teen is so desperate for money, she has decided to auction off her virginity via a YouTube video to the highest bidder.
Before you judge the young girl too harshly, first understand why she is going to such drastic lengths for money. Rebeca's mother had a stroke and they need the cash to pay for the mounting medical bills. So far, there have been three bidders and the highest bid is ...
"I made up my mind right after my 18th birthday. That is when my mother suffered a stroke," she told CNN. The stroke left her mother bedridden, unable to even feed herself or go to the bathroom on her own. At first Rebeca tried to earn money the conventional way by selling cosmetics and as a waitress, but it just wasn't enough. Then, she was inspired by Catarina Migliorini, another Brazilian woman who auctioned off her virginity to help her impoverished village.
"There comes a time when you have to make decisions to get what you want. You have to be strong," she added. Indeed she does. Her decision has made her the subject of ridicule and hostility in her tiny town. When people first heard about it, they threw coins at her as she walked down the street. Though some neighbors understand her plight. As they explained, Rebeca's sister died years ago and she has never known her father, so she feels this is her only option for helping her mother. However, Rebeca's mother is still heartbroken over her plans to "prostitute" herself. But there is another way to look at this. A Brazilian TV network offered to pay the medical expenses if she called off the auction, but the TV deal fell through and the bidding is back on.
As parents, most of us would do just about anything to keep our children safe and cared for. Is it so wrong that this child wants to do that for her mother? I can't imagine being in her shoes and pray that I never am. Now Rebeca hopes to raise enough to help her mother and start a new life in another town. It's just sad she feels this is her only way to accomplish that.
Do you think what Rebeca is doing is wrong?
