Teen Shot in Portland Mall Massacre Was in a Horrific Car Accident Just Months Before

OMG 1

shooting victimIt's every parent's worst nightmare -- that your child will be in an accident or injured in any way -- but for the parents of Oregon 15-year-old Kristina Shevchenko, they've had to live through it twice. Kristina was shot in the chest earlier this week when a masked gunman opened fire at the Clackamas Town Center in suburban Portland.

She's survived surgery and is recovering in the hospital. Her brother, Yevgeniy, has been keeping the community posted on Kristina's recovery on the family's Facebook page. What's even more horrifying than having your child in the hospital because she was the victim of a random shooting is that this is the second time this year Kristina has had a brush with death.

She was a passenger in a van that was hit when another car veered into their lane. The driver of that car was killed, and the driver of the van, one of Kristina's relatives, was hospitalized. Police believe alcohol was a factor. Her brother posted on Facebook about that incident too.

Many of you have noticed the earlier tragedy that happened in our family a couple months ago where 7 of my siblings and 2 friends were involved in a fatal car accident. You could read it online for yourself, but yes it did happen and yes Kristina was in that car accident.

I can't decide if I find her incredibly lucky or incredibly unlucky. The poor thing. Her injuries are horrible and she's going to have a long road ahead of her. The bullet missed her vital organs and ribs, thankfully, but she's had surgery and will need more in the coming weeks.

My heart goes out to her and her entire family. I can't imagine how her parents felt when they learned that just months after she'd been in an awful accident, she was the victim of a random shooter whose other victims actually died.

They must be counting their blessings at this point. I don't know about their financial situation, but they're asking for help paying for Kristina's care on Facebook. This girl is a survivor and one tough cookie. I hope she pulls through this and goes on to have a long, rich, and very uneventful life. She's been through enough already and she's only 15. Is it a miracle? I don't know, but it's darned close.

Do you believe in miracles?
