Freak School Bus Crash Sends All 36 Kids on Board to the Hospital (VIDEO)

OMG 11

school bus crashIt was a harrowing bus ride home for 36 students of Charter Tech High School for the Performing Arts in Somer Point, New Jersey on Monday. The school bus was taking the three dozen students home when a tire became loose on the Garden State Parkway and detached from the vehicle. Not wanting to veer into oncoming traffic, the bus driver drove off-road into a series of trees to bring the bus to a stop.

Miraculously, no one was seriously injured, but man, can you say nightmare?

Only four children were reported to have anything other than minor injuries, and all have been released from the hospital.

No official cause has been given for the reason the tire fell off the damn bus, but most parents News 10 talked to are just happy the bus driver knew how to handle the situation. Things could've been a hell of a lot worse, but thankfully, the driver remained calm, kept control, and drove the bus into trees she knew would stop the bus, but not go through the bus.

Many of us sends our kids off on those iconic yellow school buses every day, even waving peacefully as it rolls on down the road. We put a lot of faith in those big ole things to transport our children safely to and from home and school, so to hear that a tire freaking fell off on the highway is disconcerting, to say the least.

But, the silver lining here is the professionalism of the bus driver. If the school's gonna put kids on buses with faulty tires and axles, it's good to know they've hired safety-conscious drivers. Not that they knew the tire was going to come loose or anything, and yes, it was an accident, but you kind of have to wonder how old or ignored the bus had to be that such a major thing could go wrong.

So glad everyone's safe.

Are you ever nervous about school bus safety?

As a school bus driver I have to tell you that most likely the fault will probably lie with the bus driver. As part of your pretrip inspection you are to inspect the vehicle including tires. I am not saying it is entirely her fault but it will definitely be investigated.

Hitting a good bump in the road just right can actually cause a brand new tire to come off...

I understand that but most people don't realize that the school is not responsible, the bus driver and transoportation director are responsible unless it can be proven that they both followed protocal then it can be faulty equipment.

Who wants to bet that, if those kids had seatbelts, only a couple would need to go to the hospital?

Cass, the reason those buses don't have belts is because if the bus catches fire or ends up in water there is no way the driver would be able to free them.

to comment on the seatbelts the buses are made with high seats. that are made to keep them contained. that is why they are always told to sit in there seat and to face forward. and upon impact all the seats have cushions so when they hit the seat in front of them so they wont get hurt they are safer than you think. i am also a bus driver

I'm glad the driver kept his head straight.  Also, the comment about seat belts, a school bus is designed in such a way that if it does get in to an accident, the high padded seats will protect students.  If a bus catches on fire, or sinks in to water, specially if there are young children, a driver will not have time to unbuckle each child. And in many cases, seat belts jam.  Thats why you always carry something in your car to cut seat belts in the event that this occurs.  There is no way a driver could cut all the belts that jam in time.

Regardless of whether the bus had seatbelts, all the children would have gone to the hospital because they are minors and their parents weren't there to refuse treatment for them.

Even if my kid had been wearing a seatbelt i'd want them going and getting checked out.  That way it is also documented and if any injuries show up a few days later they will be covered.

Wait are all those commenting car seat crazy and yet they dont want seat belts on the bus?? Oy. That being said, my four year old rides a big bus to headstart in the morning and there's no way a seat would keep him from getting hurt said with my six year old daughter who is small in size. Bus driver is not at fault shit happens. Truckers check their stuff constantly and they have tire issues a lot.

Yes always , think twice .. it is not always the bus drivers fault , if the company don't keep up what are they suppose to do? .......
