When something as tragic and horrific as the Dark Knight shooting happens, it's hard to make sense of anything. Here were a group of completely innocent people just out for a fun night when a crazed madman opens fire, killing 12 and injuring countless others. Why is this the world we live in? What happened? How did we get to this point? It's nearly impossible to see the good in anything in our society. But then you hear about the heroic acts of some of the people of Aurora, Colorado -- you hear about what a 13-year-old girl named Kaylan did in the face of this meaningless violence -- and you remember that, actually, the world is filled with good people who are willing to do the right thing.
Instead of fleeing the scene of the shooting, Kaylan, whose last name hasn't been released per her mother's request, stayed behind to administer CPR to 6-year-old Veronica Moser-Sullivan, who sadly wound up passing away. At a mass in Aurora this past Sunday, Pastor Michael Walker painted a heart-breaking picture of this unforgivable scene, saying: "If you could imagine a 13-year-old giving CPR to a 6-year-old who is dying. It's a tragedy." Tragedy indeed.

The fact that Kaylan stayed back to try to help her 6-year-old friend is amazing, though. Not just because she put someone else's life before her own, but because she did it at 13 years old. That's not something most mature adults would necessarily do, nevertheless someone who can't even drive. Naturally, Kaylan's mom, Heather, is proud of her daughter. In statement, she said: "I love that she thought of somebody else besides herself. That is amazing to me."
My daughter is a far cry from being a teenager, but as a parent, I know that I would feel two things if I learned that she had acted as Kaylan did in such a terrifying situation: Scared that something could have happened to her, and unbelievably amazed that someone I created turned out so brave and compassionate. Heather, wherever you are, I hope you know that you raised one hell of a kid. And Kaylan, I hope my daughter is just as courageous and kind as you.
Check out Kaylan and her mom:
Pretty amazing, huh?

This serves as reinforcement to me that kids are FAR more capable than we give them credit for. In other debates on this board, we have parents arguing that 13 year olds need babysitters!
I had been toying with the idea of an "Emergency Preparedness" theme for one of our Pack Meetings, and this just reinforces my determination to do it, and to encourage all of our Den Leaders to bring in CPR trainers for the boys to undergo the training for their age group.
Congratulations to this fine young woman, and deepest condolences to the family of the little girl.
My 6 and 8 year olds have seen the last batman movie. They enjoy movies like that, they like the Pirates of the Carribbean franchise too. I know my kids and I know what they are capable of understanding and watching. So to say the movie was not one for a kid is only true for individual kids, not ALL. And to judge the parents of this little girl but not judge the guy who left is girlfriend and kids and even drove out of the parking lot with out them, is absurd!
My kids get to stay up late during summer from time to time, if they were die hard fans of a movie, There's a chance I would take them the midnight premier of it. I'm more concerned with the 4month old being in such a loud theater than the 6yr old being up at midnight. That movie had to be loud in his little ears, they're loud for me sometimes.
Don't jugde the parent or kids.. I think all of are parents rights to raise are kids the way we want them to be raised & not how the public want us to rasie them.. I think it was great 13 year old girl try to save 6 year old.. if it was anyone your kids, you would want someone to try save your kids.. why is that problem.. only God Can Jugde Any of us.. I think wonder story of good VS evil.. God smile on you for helping.. keep help out people know matter what people say.. Both my parent died they still helped people out from the grave in thier will & donating body to help peole out.. I hope all family & friends heal in time.. you are in my prayers..
LOL! I love how everyone is pointing out the dad who tucked tail and ran. That man will never live it down. If you disagree or agree that its okay to take kids to midnight showing of movies one thing still remains - this 13 yr old tried to save a girls life. More people need to be like this girl right here she stayed with the girl and tried to keep her alive, not many adults would have done that.
