What's scarier than teenagers having sex? Teenagers having sex after they've gotten a look at 1flesh, an ad campaign masquerading as a source for information on birth control that could earn you the name 'Grandma' in just nine months. Be afraid, moms and dads, be very, very afraid.
I stumbled on the project put together by a bunch of college kids who claim "we want sexy back" via Jezebel, where blogger Katie J.M. Baker points out the anti-contraception group is "rife with misinformation that we could pick apart for hours if we didn't have better things to do with our time." I see her point -- the site is so bogged down with mis-information about sex that I hardly know where to begin.
Unfortunately for those of who have kids, we have to invest the time. Because 1flesh has very carefully crafted an "us against them" campaign designed to convince kids that their myth-laden propaganda is right precisely because it isn't what their parents are saying.
Literally! They use phrases like "repeating the mistakes of our parents" and "if anything can be said of our generation, it’s this: We want sexy back. Our parent’s generation, well, they lost it."
They might as well just come out and say, "Hey, Teenager, we know you are soooo much cooler than your Mom and Dad, and we understand you! So come on over and take a hit of what we're selling."
What they're selling is unscientific clap-trap. Take, for example, the warning that "artificial contraception has ... increased the global rate of HIV, seriously harmed the environment, screwed up relationships, and is strongly correlated with increased divorces, abortions, and unplanned pregnancies."
Um, that would be no, nope, uh uh, what in the heck?, and absolutely false. Consider yourself warned: that's just the tip of the iceberg! You might want to take 1flesh apart piece by piece with your kids.
What kind of bizarre myths about sex have you heard come out of your kids' mouths?

I went to this website and I kind of threw up in my mouth a little. They say that saving yourself until marriage eliminates the rist of STDs. I can't begin to tell you what's wrong with that picture. Let's just say that Mr. and Mrs. X are virgins and do wait until marriage to "do the do". Well then lets say that years later Mr. or Mrs. X happens to find themselves in a predicament where they are giving up the goodies to someone else and don't use protection because hey why use it right. And the person (That is not their spouse) has a little something "extra" and Mr. or Mrs. X brings that extra on home to their SO and well you can figure out the rest. Also have they taken into account that people get married and don't ever want children? So they use contraception to prevent that from happening. I mean I can say that they are entitiled to their opinion because opinions are like assholes, everyone has one but yeah that kind of slanted misinformation could be dangerous if left in the wrong hands.
This is...this is insanity. I would be thrilled if my daughter took the "wait til marriage" stance, or at least wait until you're in a truely long term commited relationship (like her father and I did lol) to do the deed, but whether you choose to have sex or not you NEED to know the options in which to protect yourself! Its like sending your kids blindfolded into shark infested waters! >.<
This is my favorite statement from this website :
"sure, getting pregnant and raising a kid may very well be, to some, inconvenient, expensive, hard, and maddening at times, but it's a hell of a lot better than being dead"
I'm so happy this isn't how the majority think.
No. 1 this site is not aimed at teen sex, it's aimed at married couples. No. 2 having sex only with each other within the bonds of marriage is an absolutely fool proof way to avoid STDs (hotrdumommy). No. 3 shouldn't we encourage women and young women to be fully educated about their bodies so that they can make truly informed decisions? Why is there so little fact based information to be had on this issue? So much of it is agenda driven (including Jezebel, Jeanne Sager, and the 1flesh people). hotrdumommy, why would you want to teach your son or daughter that they should spend their life questioning and/or mistrusting their spouse? That's exactly what you advocate with your above statement that husbands and wives need always protect themselves against STDs.
Wait no, that isn't my favortie statement. Apparently, semen is an antidepressant and because of that, you shouldn't use condoms.
Um, aside from any opinions about this site, did you read that it is for married people?? The title on the site is "The Revolt Against Contraception In Marriage" IN MARRIAGE! What kind of reporter/blogger reports on something without actually reading carefully and understanding that the site is all about? This not a site for teenagers, it is for married people! Perhaps there are married people who don't like to use condoms, traditional pills or other hormone-based contraception... so this site would be something they could check out. Honestly, read thoroughly before you write such a misguided article.
