That's Criminal

Dad Punishes Sons With Shots of Liquor & Dip in Pool -- Is He Nuts?

by Ericka Sóuter on June 7, 2012 at 3:07 PM

shot of liquorIt's not surprising to hear that two teenage boys raided their father's liquor cabinet. That happens. A lot.

But how Kristopher Harvey allegedly chose how to punish his 13- and 14-year-old kids is just plain bizarre. Police say the Surprise, Arizona dad forced them to take three shots each of hard liquor and then tossed them in the pool to teach them a lesson.

The boys, who live with a grandmother in California, were visiting their dad when they got into his booze. By forcing them to get hammered, "I was trying to teach my children that in drinking irresponsibly, this is what the cause and effect of it is, and this is what it's going to do to you," he told CBS News.

He added, "Unfortunately it was some of the things I learned when I was a child, that this is how you teach your children to do things.  I realize now that it was the biggest mistake of my life."

No kidding! Neighbors called 911 after they heard the boys screaming in the pool. Now Harvey could face criminal charges.

If he had really thought this through, he may have realized that two teenage boys might actually think this so-called punishment was kinda fun. Taking away their Nintendo Wii, cellphone, or even a grounding all sound infinitely more miserable to the average teen. Besides, when has getting drunk ever stopped an adult from drinking again?

What do you think of how Kristopher Harvey chose to punish his teens?

Psh, my dad beat mine and my brothers assess when he caught us with his liquor. We learned our lesson real quick. And I didn't drink a drop again till I was, well almost 21.

We were really upset when we caught our 15 year old & her friend drinking at our house. We took away her cell, computer & grounded her. I was shocked at how many people had the same kind of advice though.(minus the whole pool thing, that's even MORE bizarre!!!) Quite a few people we knew said that forcing her to drink until she got sick would be the best punishment. I think that it's just plain crazy.

He did the right thing up until he threw them in the pool. Letting the liquor burn their throats and then the subsequent hangover would have been punishment enough. My SIL was caught smoking as a teen so her dad made her smoke a whole pack. She never smoked again after that!

I think he did the right thing. Let them drink until they got sick. But the pool thing? Not sure what that would accomplish

Drinking until you get sick does little to help the problem . The first time I got drunk I barfed all over mcds. I continued to drink almost every weekend for the next 4 years. In a small town, it's what you do.

I actually think this father had a point in the beginning... But then throw them in a pool? That's a little dangerous..

I could see someone using the forcible drinking as a punishment though... Especially if the kids are hungover from the night before! That would be terrible! They'd never drink again!
