A teenager tried to do the right thing and got punished for it. High school senior Stormy Rich got banned from the school bus after reporting the bullying of a special needs student.
For months, Rich watched as they treated a mentally challenged middle school girl cruelly, telling her she couldn't sit in certain spots and feeding her food they had put in their mouths. "Just because she doesn't understand doesn't mean that should be happening to her," said the Umatilla High School student, who was riding a later middle school bus because she didn't have a first period class.
When the bus driver did nothing, the horrified 18-year-old took her complaint to school officials. She and her mother both wrote formal letters but weeks went by with no response.

In her frustration, Rich told the bullies if the school wouldn't do anything about it, she would. That's when officials finally got involved, telling her she could no longer ride the bus because she was displaying bullying behavior. Their stance: two wrongs don't make a right. They went on to say they didn't get involved because the girl supposedly being picked on never complained herself and that she is capable of doing so.
Sorry, I'm not buying that excuse for a failure to act on behalf of a special needs student -- or any student for that matter. How many times have we seen victims of bullying remain silent out of fear. And in this case, it is unclear if the girl really understood what was happening to her. Does that make it any less wrong? At the very least, they should have looked into the matter.
It was appallingly irresponsible to dismiss Rich's complaints. Then to punish her for standing up for a girl she didn't think could stand up for herself is both shocking and sad. How can we teach our kids to do the right thing when the adults they come face to face with do not.
Were school officials wrong for banning Stormy Rich from the bus?

This story infuriates the fu..... n crap out of me!!!!
my son is special needs, and this past week, we went through the same kind of situation! and im so damned sick of schools doing NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im so angry and this story is just another prime example of school admin. and officials too scared of their loss of free money to just sit and do Nothing and blame someone who tries to stand up for what we teach our children TO DO!!! take care of others and live the golden rule!!!!
im so disgusted... she should ride the bus and the driver (( who is a mandated reporter for F's sake!!!)) and all the other students who bullied should be sent to sensitivity training and NOT get to ride the bus!!! who are those kids' parents???!??!?! send those idiots also!!!
UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
is this cause she said "if the school dosen't want to do anything, i will" cause if they took that as her threating them they are not to bright to be teaching kids cause i am guessing scine this serior went to the school first she would have went to the police second and so on till someone listened. what the hell was the bus driver doing while all this was going on anyway? the bus driver should have bought it to the school's atection before the girl had to! and why was the middle schooler's parnets not informed that their child was being bullied!!
I'm sure that school officials took the other girl off the bus. The video said that there wasn't any bullying on the bus now. It doesn't say anything about if the girl is still on there. Maybe her parents got them to do something different with her. I hate lose ends. But good for Stormy for trying to help her. We need more kids like her helping others. It seems like some school officials are not paying attention and don't want to do the job they are hired to do!
In my son's HS, there have been a few kids who got the everlovin' crap beat out of them after school. Why? Because they were continually bullying and harassing special needs kids. That crap does NOT fly in that school. If the school doesn't fix it quickly...which they can't always do, because they don't SEE it happen...the kids take care of matters themselves.
This is why the USA needs to stop trying to be so PC about everything!
