State Senate Declares Holding Hands Way Too Sexy for Kids

Eye Roll 35

holding handsAnother shot has been fired in the war on teaching our teenagers the truth about sex. The latest victim? Hand holding.

Yes, my friends, the great connector of two people in a crowd and safety mechanism for moms of toddlers everywhere is now officially a gateway to sexual activity! This one comes out of Tennessee, where State Senators have seen fit to actually pass a bill making this gem a piece of the sex ed curriculum. And they didn't stop there (of course they didn't).

The bill also makes a teacher going so far as to show what she (or he) means by "hand holding" a fire-able offense. In other words? If a kid asks, "So, Mr. Jones, when you say hand holding is one step away from knocking up my neighbor, what exactly do you mean?" a teacher can't actually lace their fingers together without worrying that they'll be told to pack their things and hit the road.

Gee, with a sex ed program like this, it's a shock that Tennessee ranks in the top 10 for number of pregnant teenagers, isn't it? No wonder the state's home to one of MTV's Teen Mom reality stars (Maci Bookout hails from the Chattanooga area).

Thank goodness they're making these batshit changes to really scare the heck out of kids. I just wonder if they've done enough. What will happen to a Mom who walks into a Tennessee high school with her hand firmly grasped around that of her teenager's youngest sibling? Shouldn't she be labeled a pedophile and banned from campus? After all, we can't allow such filth around our children!

Sigh.

Or maybe, just maybe, we could try acknowledging to our kids that signs of affection between two people are a natural part of life. That human connection is a building block of society. That yearning for some form of physical contact is not dirty at all.

Teenagers have it hard enough in this department. They're often feeling "too old" to seek the comfort derived from cuddling with their family members. But they're too young for the deep sexual relationships that help adults navigate a lonely world. Holding hands and hugging can be kids' best means for bridging the gap between the two.

I don't really enjoy thinking about my daughter one day having sex any more than the next parent. But I enjoy even less the thought of her sitting in a classroom being told that she should live a cold existence without the kindness of human touch lest the feel of a boy's palm makes her want to rip off her clothes and jump in the sack. What a sad society we're living in when we don't even want kids to enjoy the feel of basic human connection.

Where do you draw the line for what you consider normal emotional connection between kids and "gateway to sexual activity"?

Oh and also does this mean (when/if this becomes a California law too) that I will be sexually assaulting my kids by holding their hands??!

SMDH..... really with all the crap this was deemed worthy of passing, hmmm let's see there's bullying, hunger, foreclosures, abuse, lack of books for students all of those issue seem to be less important than holding hands? Yes let's band anything that may teach kids how to love & accept others.... so when a friend is having a rough day & just needs that little squeeze to get up the nerve or calm down, or just needs that hug you are now no longer a caring supportive friend you are now a sexual predator, way to go ya pervert.... This is what these idiots are being paid close to 6 figures .... no more Easter baskets or stockings it most definitely is the beginning of obesity & poor oral hygiene .... What the hell....

This plain stupid! Hand holding?! Really!? What's next, eye contact will get you expelled since eye contact and let someone know if they are interested (not sexually) in a person. Smdh. What the hell is this friggin world coming to !

I'm pretty sure I know some people that ended up having sex by mutual understanding that they wanted to have sex, without hand holding, kissing etc.... If they are going to do it, they will, regardless of what a bunch of moronic politicians say. The best thing we can do is arm them with preventitive measures and hope we've made it clear that pregnancy and parenting is not a game. It's not cute or trendy. It's a life changing event that most educated 35 year olds think is daunting, much less at 15 and clueless.

the best thing we can do is teach our kids sex is great inside marriage, however if they choose to have sex outside marriage they should be protected ( protection given by parents not school)

When we were in Jr. High, we all hugged each other all the time. WOW. We would have really been in trouble. We were all very affectionate without all our friends, both male and female. So let me ask you this. When 2 10 year old GIRL friends hold hands like we did in grade school, is this going to be considered a lesbian relationship? Give me a break!

Oh and remember the line on Footloose where Ariel's mom tells her dad that they used to get exicted just looked at each other, but he wasn't going to put their eyes out. Is this next. Not allowing LOOKING at the opposite sex. I can look at my husband and it can be very hot just looking in his eyes. Yep I think we should blind fold them next......

We are going backwards.  I keep thinking of the movie Mermaids when Winona Ryder's character thinks he is pregnant from being to close to a guy.  What is next standing to close to someone.  Will there have to be a 2 foot gap between kids in line at school?

That is absolutely ridiculous!  The cure for babies having babies is for parents to educate their children and for the schools to help.  If you hid the bible that is the first thing the child will find.  Be open and communicate on an age appropriate level with your children and you will be amazed at the progress you will make.
