What would Jesus do? He'd be on the side of the 16-year-old boy who's suing his high school because they won't let him wear a t-shirt printed with the words "Jesus Is Not a Homophobe," that's what he would do. Especially considering the boy, Maverick Couch, was wearing the shirt to promote "The Day of Silence," a nationwide event to show support for bullied gay and lesbian teens (coming up on April 20).
Funny, makes me think of a passage from Scripture:
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. [Matthew 5:6]
Blessed are you, Maverick Couch! Except don't wear that shirt with the rainbow Jesus fish on it, okay? 'Cause it's “indecent and sexual in nature" according to school officials.
Funny! Makes me think of a passage from Scripture:
Do not judge, lest you too be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. [Matthew 7:1 & 2]
Dear Lord, please grant Maverick Couch victory in court. Because not only is his school clearly "violating his freedom of expression," as he says, they're doing the exact opposite of everything You ever said to do!
Thank God (ha! Seriously, thank God!) that Couch has a cool mom. (She's actually the one suing the school on his behalf.) I bet that kid will "honor his mother" forever. And I bet she'll always honor her son for the brave and courageous person he's grown up to be.
Funny, makes me think of a passage from Scripture:
Blessed are you, when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you. [Matthew 5:10-12]
Do you think Maverick Couch should win the case against his school?

BUT I'm not religious, so I don't believe the way most christians would. I believe in God, not organized religion, and I believe what the shirt says to be true.
So, is school the place for an activist shirt that I believe makes a valid point?
Ps, I'm against suing over something so petty.
I agree with bg, WHAT IF THE SHIRT SAID GOD IS AGAINST HOMOSEXUALITY? Would you all still stand of for freedom of expression?
Hate it when people twist things in their favour....just like the author with the bible passages..
I don't think I'd go so far as suing the school over that and feel it's a bit much but I do NOT agree with the school telling him he can't wear it.
Looks like you pissed off a couple of homophobes with this one though, Jacqueline. Good job! :)
Three cheers for this kid, AND his mom! :o)
Did you google bible verses to just to twist to your advantage? Also, If a person wore a tshirt that said the opposite, would you be writing an article on that? Or would you be decreeing it as a hate crime?
Hmm... why is it that free speech is only considered free if you agree with the PC?
If a kid wore a shirt saying homosexuality is wrong, which category does that fall under?
In a word, YES!
There were plenty of times in high school where heterosexual males had to turn sexually inappropriate or shirts with sexual innuendo inside out. Why should it be different for homosexuals? Sexual topics are innaproriate at school, period, and everyone should be held to the same standard.
