Shocking Spanking Video Drives Home Horror of Hitting Your Teen

leather beltAs if the story of the Texas judge caught on video beating his teenage daughter with a belt wasn't disturbing enough, in researching the man's version of corporal punishment, I've come across a trend that leaves me cold. There are parents who believe that spanking teenagers is OK because big kids make bigger mistakes.

Excuse me for going there, but say whaaaaat? If you haven't already guessed, I'm not up for spanking any kid at any age. Just last night I sat in my bathroom at 2:45 a.m. with a wailing 6-year-old. Her exhaustion had prompted a temper tantrum, and my exhaustion meant I was particularly unprepared to deal with said tantrum. You'll never guess what jumped into my head that that moment.

The video of Judge William Adams beating his teenage daughter that I'd seen yesterday morning (well, I saw part of it; I had to turn it off as he continued to unleash abuse both physical and emotional against his own child) popped right into my head. Looking at my daughter's tear-stained face through eyes clouded by sleep, I softened. I knew her tantrum was over something patently ridiculous, and yet I couldn't imagine raising a hand to her.

She was acting in a way that she was clearly old enough to understand was inappropriate. And yet, a hand, a foot, a belt on her body weren't going to make that stop. It would hurt her body and make her distrust me ... and distrust the words I was about to use to explain why her actions were so inappropriate. It would effectively negate my ability to actually parent, to teach her to improve her behavior. I'd be hurting her physically now, and hurting myself in the end.

One of the really awesome things our kids gain as they grow older is the ability to think and reason, to extrapolate upon something that we say. They're not just little sleeping and pooping machines anymore! You input words, and out come other words that (usually) make sense!

By the time kids are teenagers, bad behavior may tend toward the more dangerous (stealing beers from the fridge is decidedly worse than crayoning on the walls), but their ability to contemplate those dangers is also more developed. Remember when you told your toddler to "use your words"? Talking it out instead of taking out your belt is hard, but pretty much everything in parenting is.

My 6-year-old lost a privilege for her bad behavior last night. I explained consequences when I just wanted to climb back under the covers and get some sleep. With teenagers, it's a heckuva lot easier to make them clean up after their mess -- say forcing them to use their own money to pay you back for those beers -- than it is with a toddler.

Or you could beat them senseless to make a point, and still be out the money plus have a kid who hates you and refuses to listen to anything you say ... it's up to you.

Do you think parents who spank their teenagers are taking the easy way out?

This was very difficult for me to watch because it was a harsh reminder of the childhood that I had. What a sad age that we think that children are our whipping post for our frustrations, Kritika. Sheesh.

Notably, the girl also has cerebral palsy. It's not just spanking a teenager, but a DISABLED one.

Watching the video of the spanking I have no problem with that. That is not a beating as some people has said. This is how our world has now become over telling other people how to disapline there child.
The daughter now 23?? Happened when she was 16?? In Texas we say "something smells fishy" what is actually her motive?? 7 years to report this?? I just dont get her motive!!

Any parent who spanks at all is taking the easy way out. It's way easier to beat someone in to submission and rule them by fear than it is to treat them like a fellow human being and act rationally.

I was spanked and I have never, ever resented my parents for it. As a Greek kid it's pretty much expected if you get out of line you'll get the hairbrush, broom, fly swat, etc. It's not that serious and is now funny as an adult. I'm not maladjusted and neither are any of my other spanked friends or family members.

Now, what that judge did does IN NO WAY qualify as spanking. He was most definitely beating and abusing her. But jeez if your kid mouths off or doesn't listen all my mom had to do is POINT to her open palm and I'd get back in line.

There is a world of difference between one or two smacks on a toddler's bottom, and beating a teenager (or any child) with a belt. I spank my child. I do not, and never will, beat her. You need to stop lumping all forms of corporal punishment together. And by the way, my child is NOT afraid of me.

Eddie the dad is now saying the girl posted the video because he told her to bring the car back to his house.

I think the father lost control and took it way too far but it seems as if the child did this out of blackmail.

He said she got mad because he took her car away and she admits she told him she would post the video and he told her to go ahead.

I second the comments that state that what he did was NOT spanking. It was abuse. Plain and simple. Spanking is something completely different.

There is a MAJOR difference between BEATING your child and a spanking! One this child was too old for it, too if she was disabled then it is definitely not appropriate punishment at all.

I have never ever used anything other than an open hand on a clothed bottom to spank my kids and I don't think I have spanked my now 10 yr old since he was about 5 yrs old and even then it is an absolute last choice of punishments and reserved for only major offenses. I think there is a time and place for it, but this was not it.

I have to say, this is disgusting and plain flat out WRONG! But my oldest son was 16, having never been spanked, and decided to raise a hand to his momma, and push me into a wall! Mind you I am 5'2", he was at the time 5'9". I had to react. No child of mine will EVER hit me, point blank, so I had push back. And I'd do it again in a heartbeat. He never did it again. You can believe that. And I also immediately took him to be tested for drug use. It was so out of his character, I figured something was up. He tested positive for marijuana. We had somethings we had to work out and change after that.
