Another 'Girls Are Bad at Math' Fashion FAIL

tetris teeFirst Forever 21 did it, then JCPenney, and now a boutique in Brooklyn, New York is using the "girls are bad at math" theory to try and sell T-shirts. You'd think they'd know better, but I guess it's just too hard to resist perpetuating the notion that, goodness gracious oh me oh my, girls should only concern themselves with fashion and style and not worry about learning how to add and subtract.

The store, Life:Curated, poked fun at our supposed lack of math skills in the copy next to one of their blouses, but no one's laughing. Here's what they wrote:

Just because you failed 11th grade math class doesn’t mean you can’t bring some geometry into your life with this Tetris print blouse.

Blerg. So unnecessary. What a terrible message.

As far as I can tell, the tee and its offensive copy have been pulled from the site. I'm sure any moment now there'll be an apology written on the store's blog saying that, no, they don't think girls are bad at math, and oops, our bad, but come on. It isn't funny.

This copy isn't an isolated incident, unfortunately. I could go on and on, but it's really time we stop trying to make jokes about girls being dumb. What is with that?? Why is it tolerated so much so that a hip, fashion-forward boutique in a very cool neighborhood in the greatest city in the world would think it's cute and funny to tie together a geometric-print blouse with girls failing math class?

There aren't any shirts out there that imply that African Americans are bad at math, or that men are terrible with grammar, because, well, that would be freaking offensive. But when it comes to T-shirts degrading girls and women, it's clearly allowed. Otherwise, this wouldn't keep happening.

What do you think?

But I did fail 11 grade math.
I think this is a huge overreaction, to be honest.

i failed it too! Yet i still took college courses in english and psych in grade 12. Any kid who is good at math isnt going to start sucking on purpose bc of a shirt. And if they already suck at math, hey, its funny.

I agree that it's a sensitive subject and someone at that company should have stopped it from going out with that copy. I think it's a fashion FAILURE as there's no such thing as a FAIL because fail is a verb.

Y'all need to get ur granny panties out of a bunch. Your insulting young girl's by implying their too stupid or naïve to realize that the description is simply a joke and not meant to imply girl's aren't good at math. I doubt a silly description is going to tarnish a young girl's esteem. What tarnishes them are all these moms who keep overreacting...also a negative stereotype of women that y'all are proving to be true. In middle school I asked my mom for a t-shirt that said "Blonde's T-Shirt". It had arrows pointing to the arms, neck, and bottom with captions that say, Insert arm here, Head goes here, etc. I still have it and wear it to this day and never once did it make me feel like being blonde meant I was dumb. It's just a joke for a silly stereotype that I, as a blonde and young woman knows doesn't apply to me.

I suck at math, but the stereotype that girls all do doesn't bother me. Stereotypes come about for a reason. They are usually true.

I am better at English and Writing than I am Math. That's fine by me. Calculators were invented for a reason.

People will find anything to be offended by won't they? I nearly failed Geometry and that doesn't offend me. I bet they'd use the same description for a men's shirt.

I see nothing wrong with the shirt IMO

But I got A grades in math. So did other girls I knew. It's wrong to label people and then try to back out of by saying it was a "joke" or that it's "nothing." You don't see these things aimed at men now do you? There is STILL massive sexism in engineering and the hard sciences directed against women, especially if they are pretty. It gets propagated with wrong-minded and negative statements such as this one. Don't support businesses or individuals that market such tripe.

The shirts ugly.. and the quote is tasteless.  period.

Wow. It's a shirt. These bloggers are the stupid ones making a big deal over a shirt. I find the fact this woman who wrote this 'story' seems to think girls can't take a joke. Ridiculous.
