If Selena Gomez Is Justin Bieber's 'Accessory,' What's Your Daughter?

Selena GomezSpend any significant amount of time on the Internet, and you're bound to encounter some old-fashioned misogyny. But even by those dubious standards, a poll that revealed Internet users think Selena Gomez is boyfriend Justin Bieber's "best accessory" is particularly heinous. And we wonder why teenage girls in America still suffer from low self-esteem, become victims of domestic abuse, and end up pregnant at 16?

Maybe because the Internet is full of real people who still believe a teenage girl is like a scarf or some feathers you can wind up in your hair to look au courant. Let's break this one down, folks. Selena Gomez is a successful TV and movie star and Gold-certified recording artist. She's much more than Bieber's girlfriend. But that's not why this survey is loathsome.

Selena Gomez is a teenage girl. She's a human being. That alone is enough reason she shouldn't be marginalized and cast as mere trappings of the fabulous life for the Biebs.

Take away the Disney Channel show, the DVD out in two weeks, and the hit songs, and she's a lot like ... our daughters. Parents, don't we have enough to worry about when our girls start dating without worrying that they'll be marked as arm candy?

Oh, so that's a stretch? Because what happens between Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber is their business? Folks, 54 percent of people in this survey said she was "just" this much more important than his PET SNAKE! It's a statement on society.

If this survey doesn't bother you, perhaps you're OK with the fact that 2 in every 10 teen girls are victims of domestic violence, in which they're controlled by their male partner and allowed to feel like they're "less" than him? And you're OK, perhaps, that scientists have found teen girls who suffer low self-esteem often throw themselves into romantic relationships to fill the void, giving their boyfriend power over their self-worth? And what's more, the same scientists say that can be linked to teen pregnancy rates in America?

Still think it's not a statement on girls in general and something parents need to worry about? If the '50s era thinking can tear down a girl who is on top of the charts and the world like Selena Gomez and treat her like she's as worthless as a pair of gloves, they can do it to your daughter too.

If Selena Gomez is Justin Bieber's accessory, what does that make your daughter?

hmmm. i get what you're saying jeanne, i just don't tie the article you linked to the self-esteem issues that you do... the only two choices in the question were "Selena Gomez or his pet snake". now, if there were like 5 answers (scarf, hat, gloves, shoes, selena) then i could see the issue. but above those results they even stated that Selena Gomez was actually one of the celebrities voted most stylish.

i think it was just one of those stupid kind of questions you see - i mean, it was listed with the same question as "If Lady Gaga and Dennis Rodman had a baby, what would that baby be? - A little monster (78%) or a Baller (21%)." i would take any results they round up with a grain of salt.

I don't think Selena Gomez really wants to be with that guy. She doesn't like him.

I love Selena Gomez now, but I honestly didn't know much about her until she was JB's girlfriend.

I always thought of her as the chick from the cheesy Disney wizard show.

And if anyone actually called her an "accessory", that's just one person's opinion. I like her music better than his.

"Love You Like A Love Song" is so awesome! I'm 27 and I love it!

I understand your concern, but she doesn't seem the type to let herself get taken advantage of in such a way. I mean, she's living a dream and I'm sure she's not going to let anything get in the way of her happiness so I'm certain she'd cut The Biebs loose if he ever started treating her differently or wanted to take control of any choices she makes.

Selena looks like a smart girl, you just have to have faith that she'll do what's right for HER and not someone else.

Totally agree. I mean, almost all of the bieber fans are these children who have no absolute sense of respect nor recognition of the many young artists in the industry. PLUS, Selena has achieved so much and most defintely does not deserve her WORK to be getting overshadowed over these teen hearttrob boyfriends she's been dating, (lucky boys, btw). Cmon' now, Selena knows exactly what she is doing & what she wants, she's living her life & not giving two banana finger peeling eff's on who thinks otherwise. She doesn't say sorry for anything she does wrong, oh OPPS, I meant NORMAL, because HELLO! Teenagers experiment and do many things out of the blue. Knowing her since the early 2000s & her disney show & movies, I see a whole LOT of potential, especially with SG being her little smart self, she can do whatever she wants & whatever she likes. I expect to see a lot more success from her, too bad her personal life is so rubbed against on. Overall, she's doing HIM the favor, he's always been the little puppy begging for some attention other than care & sister love and lookie, lookie, he got what he wanted. Rubbish. Great point of view by the way! JB's little girl fanatics should think on how they treat others, even if they are famous celebrities!

Society marginalizes celebrities all the time, this is no different. I mean think of all the husbands of famous females who are labeled with their wives' last names as opposed to their own. If she were as famous as him, perhaps that question would not have been asked. Think of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, she was never labeled his "arm candy" because she was just as famous as him. Celebrities are two-dimensional to the average person, we only take them at face value. And lets be honest, every time Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are together, she's attached to his arm.

I'm not inclined to agree with the author. I mean, yes, girls in America (and all over the world) certainly do have self esteem issues, but as the first commenter pointed out, the inference that it's a HUGE problem based on the results of the survey is pretty empty. No one's saying that Selena Gomez is JUST an accessory, or NOT a succesful actress/singer/whatever (and depite the fact that she's ridiculously famous, I maintain that her singing isn't amazing). First of all, that wasn't an option on the survey, and if anything the fact that she IS Justin Bieber's best "accessory" implies that she has a large degree of fame on her own. It doesn't mention ANYWHERE that Selena is "just an accessory". If there was an issue, it would be with the people who wrote the survey, not the people who answered it, and to be fair it could just be a really badly phrased question.

1. she's a teen girl with a boyfriend - IT HAPPENS!

2. that's a statement straight out of fans mouths.  that's taken from jealous girls who fantasize about the boy being with them, and teen boys dying to make Selena their own.

3. it's not self esteem issue.  i dated in high school, was used as an accessory as much as i used them for an accessory - and y'know, I LOVE MYSELF!  i love being me, and that's not gonna change just because i was "arm candy".
