Colleges Now Letting Kids Major in Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Studies

rainbow american flagCalling all high school students on the lookout for new, more personally relevant college majors to choose from! Tell your guidance counselor that San Diego State University will soon become the first campus in California to offer an undergraduate degree in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies. How cool is that?

SDSU won't be THE trailblazing university to offer this degree; Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, were the first. But I guarantee more schools will be following suit. And as a mom who wonders what sort of a post-college economy my kids will face, I find that comforting!

Because not only is this new academic development a symbolic leap forward, it could be a sign that the job market will be improving soon ...

According to SDSU, a degree in LGBT Studies will be useful in the fields of medicine, law, and business, but over time, I honestly think it will be seen as a plus in every field. Consider what a banner year this has been: Same-sex marriage was legalized in New York, Don't Ask, Don't Tell was repealed. LGBT-specific jobs, like green jobs, could open the door to a world of professional opportunities that never even existed before.

On the other end of the spectrum, as much progress as we've made this year, there's still so much work to be done. Tragic tales of gay teens driven to suicide by bullies are proof that we need counselors in schools with LGBT expertise. Not to mention the fact that standard curriculum promoting LGBT awareness might just go a long way in preventing bullying from happening in the first place.

SDSU will start accepting students into the new major in spring 2012.
