Will Demi Lovato Bikini Pic Trigger Eating Disorders in Teens?

by Jacqueline Burt on May 18, 2011 at 11:46 AM

Demi LovatoDemi Lovato's "bikini bod" Twitter pics sort of broke my heart. I had a bad feeling last month when her PSA for the project "Love Is Louder Than the Pressure to Be Perfect" debuted: The poor kid was barely out of rehab for an eating disorder, cutting. Making her the spokesperson was setting her up for a backslide, and it came in a desperate cry for public approval ("See how great I look in this bikini??").

I cringe to see a young girl go through this struggle under the media microscope, but in a way, this does make Demi Lovato the perfect anti-perfection role model: She's still struggling to make peace with herself, and that's a process every teen girl (not to mention grown woman) can relate to.

My only fear is that girls who are going through similar issues will forget about Demi's ups and downs and instead obsess over that bikini pic: "Are my thighs bigger than hers?" "Her stomach looks so flat and mine is so disgusting." In eating disorder parlance, photos like this one can qualify as a "trigger" (something that sets self-destructive behavior patterns back into motion). We all know how teens (again, not to mention grown women) endlessly, neurotically compare themselves to their peers.

Yes, there are pictures of ridiculously beautiful women in bikinis all over the place, but I'm afraid that the eating-disordered girls who identify with Demi will feel betrayed by her hot-bod shot. That they'll misinterpret a bid for attention as a declaration of health: "All better now!"

Again, Demi is just a kid and I do not think it's fair to burden her with role model responsibilities. But I hope the next time she's feeling bloated and blue, she'll tweet about that, too, so her fans can see how perfectly imperfect she truly is, just like the rest of us.

What kind of message do you think Demi's bikini pics send to teens?

OMG.  If things are really that bad then you should lock your kid in the house and NEVER let them view media

You are forgetting to mention the words that she tweeted along with the pic which were very inspirational. What she doesn't need is people constantly judging her every move.

The pic is showing how she's proud of her body... And encourages girls to love their body too.

I think she looks like a beautiful, healthy girl. And a slender one. But conversely to the idea that teens would look at her figure and pine to be like her, most of the comments from girls on twitter are that she's FAT! :(

This article reads as though it was written by a woman past her prime, feeling bad about her own body and projecting her own insecurities upon an 18 year old. The fact is, Demi looks much thicker than she did last summer in those other bikini pics. She still looks good to me, but the weight she is carrying in that picture should be the standard. Any slob of a girl who lets herself get past that point needs to think about dieting and exercising... bnot because of appearance or body image, but for plain old health reasons.

Oh Jeez. I didn't realize you'd be moderating these comments. I guess mine will never see the light of day. Too much truth involved.

Al: what a deeply troubled and crappy view of women and the female figure you have! Luckily people also take personality into consideration so it's unlikely anyone will ever find you very attractive.

As someone who has had and ED and issues I think it's great that she feels confidant enough to put up a picture of herself in a bikini. I still think it screams attention though. If you are comfortable in your skin why post the pic? If she really doesn't believe inner beauty comes from how you look then why did she post it?
