School Paddles Teenagers As Punishment

Paddling a child's behind might still have its parental supporters, but get this -- 17 out of 18 teens chose paddling as their punishment at a recent high school prom.

At school.

Where was this? Dubai where you get a month in the slammer for PDA? Singapore where they cane you for gum on the streets?

No and no.

This was in the good ol' US of A, where an Alabama high school cited 18 kids for violating the prom dress code, and 17 of them ponied up for a paddling.

And apparently that isn't news. Or at least not nearly as newsworthy as the attempt to make us feel bad for a girl's slutty prom dress -- the real focus of a recent AOL News piece where I uncovered the preference for paddling in an aside buried near the end.

I'll have to admit to some regional bias -- a spanking at school in my eighties childhood was unheard of, at least in New York State. To be fair, my husband recalls being called to the office in second grade and paddled across the behind for telling another child they had the teacher's germs.

No surprise, he was born and raised in the south.

Southerners' preference for corporal punishment is not just anecdotal -- a survey in 2009 found parents below the Mason Dixon line are the most likely to be pro-spanking. And southern kids are more likely to be spanked at school than anywhere else in the states.

But even the pro-spankers I've met draw the line somewhere in elementary school. This is the first I've ever heard of spanking a high schooler -- or a high schooler submitting to it.

If you're a spanker, what age is your cut off?

discipline, high school

This was an option in my high school (still in the south at that age) and many chose it. I refused and I think it is sick. One of our spankers (school employees who disciplined with the paddle) was arrested and fired for dating a student. The paddle used is thick wood. A pedophile using a weapon to assault a teenager legally just isn't my cup of joe.

well, i think that it's cool an all to chose your punishment but some things go to far. idk i'm 17 but my opinon don't matter, but spanking sounds better then being expelled or written up, i mean come on how can you go home an be like mom or dad i'm suspended or hey just to tell you i'm expelled? well there i think that felt good to say, but hey im up for a spanking aslong as it anit with a wooded paddle. but to warn you if you tried to touch me without my consent id beat the living crap outta you

Here's the thing: I'm from Alabama, so I can kind of tell you how this works. We get a choice of 3 to 5 pops with a paddle that IMMEDIATELY goes off of your school record, or we can choose out of school suspension which will show up on your school record and possibly ruin chances to get into college or even get certain scholarships. The kids were old enough to choose themselves and obviously chose the one that would benefit them more.

If Lydia got in trouble for something like that, I'd tell her to take the paddling instead of the other options. But at home cutoff for spanking will be when she's about 8ish I think.

Paddling options usually come with an option of in-school suspension, too. With ISS you still get your school work but you lose the social aspect of classes. If a child has been acting a fool their entire high school career then ISS might hurt them but if they used their brain and acted like they had some sense while they were in high school then the one ISS wouldn't matter much to their record. If we want to get technical, neither would OSS. Anything that will get you expelled will not come with a paddling option.

Oh, I grew up on the 'hooch, if it means much. I don't think it does, though.

I host about school paddling as physical abuse, sexual abuse, and sexual harassment.
I think, whether intended or not, this type of incident is a perfect example of both quid-pro-quo and hostile environment sexual harassment. The students do not feel so free to "choose" paddling as railroaded into it by artificially high alternate punishments. The paddlers tend to stack the deck until most students feel compelled to either "bend over for butt pain" or else have grades, GPA, and their record harmed.
The community receives a great deal of false teaching from churches that spanking and school paddling are "christian," even though there is not one single New Testament verse that instructs a parent to hit a child, let alone a teacher, and not one single example of Jesus or any apostle hitting a child.
There is tremendous denial over the sexual and sadistic aspects as well.

That really stinks.

You are very out of touch! Paddling up to age 18 is quite common in some Southern schools. See

I really dont agree with this but I have an 18 year old child who might have benefitted from this lol

Paddling a teenager, (especially if done by the opposite sex) can derail a teenagers sexual developement. It can cause a "Spanking fetish" and if the teenager is from a broken home, a mother/father fixation. People don't like to think this can happen, but trust me, IT CAN!
