'Rich Kids of Instagram' Who Post Pics of All Their Wealth Need a Time-Out

by Kiri Blakeley on August 20, 2012 at 5:11 PM

Let's say you're a rich young adult or teen who lives in a mansion, drives a Ferrari, travels by private jet, and vacations at the most exclusive resorts in the world. Oh, and let's say you don't pay for any of it -- your parents do. Would you a) thank your lucky stars for your freak of birth and keep your mouth shut about it, b) photograph your freakishly luxurious lifestyle and share it with the world. Well, if you're the "Rich Kids of Instagram," you of course do the latter. Because there's no point in being a member of the one percent if the other 99% don't know about it!

The Rich Kids of Instragram is a tumblr page dedicated to, well, filthy rich kids. They take pics of themselves with the accoutrements of the wealthy -- their gold iPhones, their helicopters, their receipts for a dinner totalling over $100,000, even a gold-plated AK47 -- and upload them to Twitter and Flickr via Instagram. It's like Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous without Robin Leach. Only these spawn of the filthy rich did squat to earn their wealth. (#nojobnoproblem is a popular hashtag.)

Nor do these real life Richie Riches show off their lucre anonymously -- Twitter handles and hashtags let you know exactly who they are. Not the safest thing in the world. Most of their parents probably spend a lot on security. In fact, billionaire Michael Dell recently shut down his daughter Alexis' Twitter account after she repeatedly blabbed about her family's plans and locations via Tweet even though her Dad (the CEO of Dell Computers) spends millions trying to keep that stuff secret. Hey, you can buy planes, but not brains!

Social media is all about oversharing, and this has got to be oversharing in its most grotesque form. The country is still in a recession, millions have lost their jobs, their health care, and their homes, and struggle daily just to put food on the table. It's one thing if you've made billions and want to show it off for some reason -- but when you're just showing off the money you had zilch to do with earning, then it's gauche, tasteless, and vomit-inducing.

The only positive thing I can see coming out of this is perhaps the country will wake up and tax the rich as they deserve! Clearly, they are not hurting for cash. Wanna get a little irate? Go check out Rich Kids of Instagram.

This is just kids being kids. You sound bitter and jealous. Yes, these kids have no decorum, but this is not uncommon among anyone these days. Let these kids' parents worry about the brats their children are turning out to be, not you.

If my teen kept taking her security so lightly I would stage a kidnapping. Mostly for my own amusement but she might learn something.

Oh, poor you, all nauseated by being a Have-Not.   If you can't handle their displays of wealth, don't look at it.  If you want to be wealthy, quit bitching and moaning for a living.  Taxing the rich isn't going to make you richer, smarter, or worth a penny more an hour than you are right now - regardless of what Julia has led you to believe.

The outrage over 'Rich Kids of Instagram' is in my opinion, pretty outrageous.  Is this not the lifestyle we as a society applaud and all seem to desire to achieve as well - but now want to bash these kids because they happen to be able to live it?  Jealous much?  It's laughable.  I certainly didn't grow up rich, I looked at the other kids in school with nicer clothes, and my usually, one pair of jeans to make it through the year wishing I had those things... but didn't hate them for it.  And MY goodness, get over the whole 99 to 1 ratio.  It's called hard work and dedication.  Tax the HECK out of them, THAT is fair, fo sho.  But undeserved jealousy while people sit on their butts and collect government benefits that aren't always needed, is not.  I think these kids are having the time of their lives and if anyone has a problem with it - it should be their parents, nobody else.

Let live and love some more, we'd all be much happier :D

One more thing -- why is it that people i.e. the "99%ers" like to watch this stuff on TV, such as the Kardashians, but when they see people be prosperous in real life, there's suddenly a jealousy problem?

I do not watch that crap. People are "Have Nots" because of this whole big money corporate business bullsh*t that these kids' parents more than likely became rich off of. With lots of money also comes a FALSE sense of entitlement.

@Lyrissa -- keep telling yourself that. It's a good way to ensure that you and your children will never be able to acrue a lot of wealth. If you tell your kids that they cannot help shape their own destinies and that it is always someone's else fault that they are not doing well, then they will never be able to get a better life.

they may not have worked for it, but their parents have...... they deserve the money and they are just kids.... who's to say they are opposite paris hilton types and actually work with their parents to take over the company..... Not every rich kid is Paris Hilton..... I find this article vomit worthy and grotesque..... It is their lives you have no right to judge....

OMFG I cannot believe some of these comments on here. The US and many countries around the world are struggling every day to make ends meet, as the author has stated. Are you seriously saying that these kids that are flaunting their over-the-top lifestyles are justified in bragging about what they have? And yes, I don't care if you think it's just like watching any other reality TV personality in their lavish homes....this is blatant showing off of what they have (shit they didn't even EARN) to people who don't
