Facebook is offering a whole new way to overshare. Thankfully, it has nothing to do with your relationship status, whether (or not) you're expecting a baby, or allowing us to write 1,000-word status updates. Instead, starting today, you can post on your timeline that you're an organ donor, and Facebook will help you sign up with official organ donor registries.
Incredible! Might this mean that Mark Zuckerberg actually wants to use his power for good -- not just evil world domination?! Guess so. But it sounds like we have two other people to thank even more so, being that Zuck's big organ donation idea was supposedly inspired by his med student long-time GF Priscilla Chan and the late Steve Jobs, whose life was extended by years following a liver transplant. Now he's telling ABC News that "even one individual can have an outsized impact on the challenges facing another, and on the world."
Wow, was totally not expecting this altruistic twist in the road!
It's not even like an extra app you have to "allow" to access your profile, which digs into and uses your other private info. This Facebook addition is much more straightforward and simple to use. The whole point being that Zuck wanted to make it easy for people to connect to other people and make a difference. He told Robin Roberts:
Facebook is really about communicating and telling stories ... We think that people can really help spread awareness of organ donation and that they want to participate in this to their friends. And that can be a big part of helping solve the crisis that's out there.
Imagine that. Using the power of social networking to do something completely selfless, not egomaniacal. It's revolutionary! Okay, maybe not that revolutionary, because people have used Facebook for charitable causes and organizing cancer walks and such for years now, but this is an effort actually being trailblazed by the site itself.
For once, it sounds like Zuck himself's keen on getting us to steer our oversharing toward helping others (not necessarily just putting more money in the pockets of target advertisers). Good for him! And better yet, good for humanity.
