If you're anything like me, you've uttered the words, "I'm thinking of quitting Facebook" at some point in the last few years. Or, at the very least, you've thought them. But, again, if you're like me, you just can't find the balls to do it. Something holds you back -- be it that you don't want to lose touch with old friends you've reconnected with; you're obsessed with stalking a certain someone; or you just don't want to be the weirdo who hasn't gotten with the times. It's damn near impossible. Like Jack Twist said in Brokeback Mountain: "I wish I knew how to quit you."
But you should. I should. We all should. Facebook adds nothing enriching to our lives. It's a vapid, boring, sometimes infuriating time-suck, and we'd most likely be better people without it. So, let's do it. On the count of three. One ... two ... okay, let's at least try! And if you need a little motivation, here are 10 more reasons why you should quit Facebook.
1. It's boring. Plain and simple. "Steve just listened to 'Blood Bank' by Bon Iver on Spotify." "Lisa just checked into Baja Fresh." Who cares?! When did play-by-plays of the mundane details of people's lives become mandatory?
2. It makes you feel bad about yourself. Remember, you're comparing the insecure, confused, private version of yourself to everybody's highlights reel on Facebook. No fun.
3. No more worrying about being tagged in photos. Everybody gets a little nervous logging onto Facebook after a drunken night that was filled with iPhone pics. Yeah, you might still be on there, but at least you won't be tagged -- and at least you won't know about it!
4. No more worrying about co-workers and superiors knowing what you're up to. When it comes to work, the less of you on the Internet, the better.
5. People who aren't on Facebook are cool. Think about the reaction people get when they say they're not on Facebook -- everyone's shocked. It sets them apart. They march to their own drummer.
6. It's a great excuse for not remembering people's birthdays. You have to call your Aunt Debbie on her birthday now, because, duh, it was right there in front of you on Facebook. Just sayin', if you're not on Facebook ...
7. You won't feel pressure to think of a funny, original status update to thank everyone for wishing you a happy birthday.
8. You'll actually get news the old-fashioned way. Through text.
9. You'll have more free time. To tweet.
10. You'll be one of the very few people who actually follows through -- and quits Facebook.

my therapist told me that a lot of people come to see him because of all the drama that goes on with people that use Facebook. all the relationships that have been damaged. i keep saying that i am going to quit, but it has become an addiction. could i get a lot more done if i was not on it? yes. should i try to get off of it, ? I could try. would it make a difference in my life if i quit it"? probably so. however, being that it is an addiction; i will have to stop for 30days at least. before i even got an account with facebook there was my space. it seems like a lot of people have to be up in other peoples business and i need to stop that cause that just stresses me and others out.maybe i will start tomorrow.
I have my family and close friends on FB.
I'm an Army wife. As such I live far away from home. I can upload a ton of pictures and my entire family can see how the kids are growing, I can see what's going on back home with classmates, friends, family members.
FB keeps me from wasting too much money on mailing pictures home.
Nah, but if you're insecure enough to really "care" about all the crap that people post, and you're worried about being "tagged after a drunken night out", then you're probably not mature enough to handle any social media. I'll keep it, thanks. The good outweighs the annoying for me.....
I love FACEBOOK! Sure I get tired of reading about what was for dinner tonight or being expected to look through photo albums when I feel like screaming EDIT! However, the way it is now you can block things you don't want to see such as the games. Prayer requests for Aunt Mary's outpatient surgery drive me crazy. Whining and complaining constantly make me think one is just that. My pet peeve now are the people who haven't figured out how to keep their FB and Pinterest accounts separate. And, it is like being in HS school again and getting upset when no one likes your post.
I could go on and on but, fact is, I keep up with my best friends from childhood, HS, former co-workers, and other special people who have touched my life. I've actually gotten to know cousins and other family when I had only previously talked to them briefly at weddings and funerals. Plus, through FB I've made new and dear friends. I'll never quit!
I like fb and have no plans to quit.
Uhm... quit twitter, pintrist, and the stir as well, then? They're ALL vapid vampiers of time, but at least I can manage my small list of friends and family on facebook and keep in touch, FOR FREE.
Wow. I have more reasons to quit Cafe Mom. There are some good groups here, and some good people, but my God why is it that there is always such messed up crap posted up here just for the sake of horrifying the masses?! Some of the most disturbing news articles I have ever read have come from this site.
I enjoy FB, but I agree with the4mutts above, how can anyone be friendsl with 1000 people....this seems so impersonal. I love getting picture and reading what folks are up to...super way to communicate with friends...especially old friends I have found on FB. It is time consuming, but Pinterest and other sites like that are my new obsession.
