Being that season 5 of Mad Men is delayed until 2012, I'm betting I'm not the only fan who is having a hard time wrapping her head around how she's going to spend the next however many months without Don Draper, Peggy Olson, and Joan Harris. So, thank goodness for Netflix! For those of us who don't yet own the DVDs for seasons 1 to 4, the site will be our official go-to place for re-living the first half of the '60s on Madison Avenue.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer, issued a statement that was basically the verbal equivalent of jumping up and shouting, "Wahoooo!":
Mad Men has been and continues to be a representation of TV at its best and Netflix is proud to be the syndication home for this acclaimed series. This deal secures long term instant access to an iconic show for Netflix members for years to come.
The deal also gives Netflix exclusive syndication rights to the series!
So, it's no wonder Sarandos is over the moon. This is the first time Neflix has scored rights like that. It didn't come cheap, either. Each episode clocked in at nearly $1 mil. apiece. Ouch! But, it's so worth it!
Now, where the hell was this deal when I was trying to get caught up before season 4, and I was trolling spam-filled bootleg streaming sites like Don's beatnik ex-girlfriend Midge in her most recent incarnation as a junkie? I swear, I was a woman possessed trying to get more Draper! And when I couldn't find the episodes I needed, I would go spend $5 per DVD at my local Blockbuster. Oh yeah, I was willin' to pay the big bucks to get my fill of pillbox hats and hot extra-marital affairs.
But I confess -- all along, I had a subscription to Netflix. I just couldn't stand to wait the 24-48 hours to return my DVDs in the mail and get another one back. That's how bad the addiction was. I'm sure there are those of you out there who know what I'm talkin' about.
Thankfully, as of July 27, the first four 13-episode seasons will be available on Netflix Instant. You can just pop on there and stream all the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce dramz you want. HEAVEN! There's just one little hitch: If you happen to miss any eps of season 5, it won't debut on Netflix Instant until after the season finale airs on TV. If you want to see 'em before that, I guess you'd have to roll like I did circa summer 2010 ... Googling for episodes like a truly mad woman.
Are you excited to hear about Mad Men coming to Netflix?
