Apple MacBook Pro Adds 'Thunderbolt' Speed

Emily Abbate

macbook proThis morning Apple released a brand-new lineup of MacBook Pros, and I couldn't be more unfazed. Cosmetically they don't look much different than their aluminum-bodied predecessors. On the inside, however, these beauties are a completely different ballgame. Okay, so they're a tad bit faster ... and there's a better video camera. Okay, so I suppose there are a few cool new things. But I mean, no one wants to admit they have the second-best thing going, right?

Let's take a look and see what these new puppies have to offer, shall we?

More speed: Comparing your older MacBook to the newer version is like comparing a PC to a Mac. Sorry PC loyalists, but true Mac enthusiasts see where I'm coming from. The new MacBook models are 2x faster

Thunderbolt: Apple reached out and collaborated with Intel on its Light Peak project to add a port for Thunderbolt-enabled external devices (like hard drives, printers, TVs). So this will make data transfer faster. Even more speed!

Face-time camera: The MacBook can now stream videos that are extremely crisp thanks to the new camera. And thanks to the new widescreen format, you have the chance to make 720p HD calls anywhere around the world and your friends can fit in the picture, too.

And for those using the 13-inch models, be excited that you're getting a new SDXC card slot to transfer photos to and from your laptop! Those with bigger models, well, they already had that luxury.

When all is said and done, this new generation of MacBook Pros definitely doesn't demand my jealousy like the first. Starting at $1,199 for the 13-inch, there's no doubting that it's the best laptop option on the market right now. If you're looking to invest, it's definitely worth the money for a quality product. But with the same overall design and cosmetic look (I'm a girl, I care about these things), I wouldn't worry too much about jumping on the new technology bandwagon just yet. Maybe the price will go down soon, too.

What do you think about the new MacBook Pros?
