iPad Apps That Sync With TV Shows Are the Future

Lindsay Mannering

ipadLast week, Fox launched a Bones iPad app, which sounds kinda boring because who wants a Bones iPad app? BUT! It isn't boring, and in fact, it's kind of a really cool idea.

The app is a companion to the TV show and offers exclusive real-time content as you watch the show. So say you didn't understand a word those smart scientists used ... you turn to your iPad app and look at the glossary. Or say you like the song that's playing in the background of a scene ... the app has a "jukebox" section that tells you all about each song and artist used during the show.

Now I don't really need a Bones iPad companion app, but I would love one for The Bachelor, or Jersey Shore, or The Real Housewives of Anywhere ... I have so many questions during those shows that I want answered!

Basically, I want a companion app for all reality shows. I'm less interested in apps for shows with actors because I would never suspend my sense of disbelief so far that I'd feel compelled to learn more about these pretend people living pretend lives. But real people? I wanna know it all.

So Fox, NBC, anyone out there who's listening ... I'd like an app for every reality show you've got. Give me real-time stats on each Bachelor contestant. Tell me where they went to high school and college, how old they were when they had their first kiss, and their thoughts on health-care.

Give me a translator for the Jersey Shore -- what does G.T.L. mean, when was it first used, and how many times it's been Googled. Translate for me what Jwoww mumbles on her late-night phone calls, and convert The Situation's euphemisms into something I can understand.

Provide analysis on the Real Housewives' net worth and any lawsuits they've got, prior or pending. Give me a poll to vote for who I agree with in each fight, and a Twitter feed to read what everyone else is thinking.

I just want to be able to say "there's an app for that" when I talk about my favorite reality shows. Is that too much to ask?

What do you think of an iPad companion app for TV shows?
