Political Wrangling

Imagine you're considered to be a top contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.

Now imagine your own mother is telling the world she really doesn't think you should run.

That's exactly what just happened to Jeb Bush. In a Today show interview Thursday, Barbara Bush said that although she believes Jeb is the most qualified candidate, "We've had enough Bushes."

    Do you agree with her?

I am not a fan of the NRA. I am not a fan of guns. If you asked me whether or not I'd want a kid wearing a T-shirt that said "NRA" with a picture of a gun on it to the school where my children also go, I'd say "No." But then I have to ask myself why -- beyond my personal opinion of the NRA. And that is where I get stuck. An eighth grader in West Virginia was arrested after refusing to take off his T-shirt, which had the NRA name on it and the motto "Protect your right." The school's clothing policy doesn't specifically ban a shirt like that, although it comes close, as it bans clothes that "display violence."

President Obama's recently-released 2014 budget includes an initiative that would provide universal preschool to low- and moderate-income 4-year-olds.

"That's nice," you're saying, "but how does he expect to pay for all that?"

    Simple.

Obama wants to raise the federal tax on tobacco products.

I'm not generally a fan of raising taxes, but this plan sounds pretty good to me -- how about you?

It’s been three years since Congress rammed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act down our throats, and the legislation remains wildly unpopular. According to a Kaiser Health Tracking Poll last month, nearly two-thirds of Americans still have an unfavorable opinion of Obamacare.

The law made its way through the court system, with the Supreme Court eventually upholding it as constitutional last June, on the grounds that it was a tax, and not a mandate. In other words, it was decided that the government isn’t forcing Americans to buy a product they may or may not want -- it is just taxing them if they don’t.

The chatter about Hillary Clinton running for president in 2016 just won't die down. And now, the rumor has seemingly undergone an entirely new transformation: Some are saying she may land on a dream ticket with current FLOTUS Michelle Obama. Whaaaa?! Says who!?

Technically, the buzz stems from bumper stickers random people have made on CafePress and a quote from former Clinton spokeswoman Karen Finney, who told the Washington Examiner, "Both women are proven effective leaders who've raise children, so dealing with Congress would be a snap!" True, true! Seems to be more wishful thinking than something that could actually happen, but it sure would be amazing if it did! Here, six reasons why the two powerful and brilliant moms have what it takes to get 'er done in D.C. ...

So it looks like this sequester is probably going to be happening.

The president has until 11:59 p.m. tonight to issue a sequestration order, and at this point, it doesn't look like any last-minute deals are being made.

But if the sequester does go into effect, what does that really mean for us?

We've given you the big picture and now it's time to talk about the details -- what's next for you and your family.

    Here goes ...

Everyone's talking right now about sequestration, a confusing term that essentially means $85 billion in cuts will automatically go into effect at the end of this week if lawmakers can't come to some sort of last-minute compromise.

The problem with sequestration isn't that it cuts spending -- because I think we'd all agree that the government needs to cut spending. It's that no one has any input as to where and how those cuts are made. Sequestration means that every agency loses funding -- period.

And these automatic cuts will affect pretty much all of us in some very frustrating ways.

Former Senator Pete DomeniciIt's not often that I feel bad for politicians, but here we are. Former Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico has come out to announce that he fathered a son with, get this, the daughter of another Senator! The child of Domenici and Michelle Laxalt is now 34 years old, an adult himself, so why the sudden pressure to make a big to do about his birth?

Ah, here's where the pity comes in. Laxalt, daughter of former Nevada Senator (and governor) Paul Laxalt, and Domenici were facing the possibility that someone else was going to out their secret.

It only took 148 years, but black people in Mississippi are officially free. Like officially officially. They probably thought they were, since this is 2013 and all, and the dark days of enslavement have ostensibly been left in the historical dust. Yet the 13th amendment, that heralded legal add-on that abolished the institution of forced servitude, was never ratified in that state. So even though chattel slavery has long been over, thank goodness, it’s still been on the books and hence, quite legal, up until February 7. This month. In 2013. Oops. Way to keep up with the paperwork, Mississippi.

There's no doubt that Hillary Clinton is a popular figure among Democratic women. Her approval rating is even higher than the president's.

But I also noticed something interesting when Condoleezza Rice spoke at the Republican National Convention last summer--

My Facebook newsfeed lit up with emotional accolades from my Republican and independent friends, who were enamored by Rice's speech and her poise.

This leads me to believe that 2016 could give us an awesome and historic presidential candidate match-up: Hillary Clinton vs. Condoleezza Rice.

And I'm not the only one hoping it'll happen.
