Every time a commercial for the upcoming Olympics comes on, it's quite easy to get excited. From February 7 to 23, folks around the world will be glued to their TV screens, slack-jawed while witnessing incredible physical feats in skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, hockey, yes, even curling. But one of the most recognizable female skiing champions will sadly not be participating this year: Lindsey Vonn is out of the Sochi Olympics due to a lingering knee injury.

She is the reigning Olympic and World Cup downhill skiing champion, but according to a post on her official Facebook page, she wrote, "I am devastated to announce that I will not be able to compete in Sochi."

Though she's made headlines most recently due to her personal life -- dating Tiger Woods -- you've got to admit that it's going to be tough not seeing her compete for the good ol' US of A in the Olympics this year.

Diana Nyad has become the first PERSON (not woman) to cross the Florida Straits Cuba without a shark cage. She swam for roughly 53 hours straight and was given sustenance, but was mostly unable to keep it down. She is also 64 years old.

Words can't really express the wonder of this feat. This was her third attempt to do the crossing; she had been stymied by many factors in the past during her previous attempts to make the 110-mile swim.

Jennifer Capriati has been one of the most memorable and talented tennis players in recent history. Her life off the court, however, has not been nearly as winning. From arrests for shoplifting and possession of marijuana to dealing with substance abuse problems, her personal life has been bumpy at best over the years. Now, she's hit another big bump after being charged with misdemeanor battery and stalking charges.

The charges stem from an incident that allegedly happened on Valentine's Day at a gym in North Palm Beach, Florida. According to the Associated Press, Capriati approached her ex-boyfriend, Ivan Brannan, who was working out there. When he tried to escape from her into the locker room, she jumped in front of him and punched him in the chest.

That was allegedly just the culmination of a whole slew of events that started after they broke up in February 2012.

Now that Lindsey Vonn and Tiger Woods have come out to announce that they're an "official" couple, people have a lot to say about what's going on with these two. Can a man who was such a serial cheater ever really change? It's also hard to believe a sports star with the size of an ego like Tiger, who once banged porn stars and asked them about "golden showers", would be able to find someone who's okay with that kind of past. Because apparently even Lindsey thought the whole "sex problem" thing was hilarious three years ago.

When Tiger hosted a news conference announcing his transgressions, Lindsey was enjoying fame as an Olympic skier. Someone told her that Woods gave friends hugs after the statement, and she joked, "They're like, 'Yeah, you're awesome, you go have that sex.'"

Guess it's not so funny now that you're dating him, is it? Awk-ward.

The NFL has always been known as a boys' club, for obvious reasons. It's a male-dominated world, from the players to the coaches to the media personalities who are commenting on said testosterone-y world. But now we've got Lauren Silberman, who's trying out at the NFL regional trials this coming Sunday in New Jersey. And she's the first woman to ever do so!

Silberman, 28, doesn't have all that much experience (she's trying out to be a kicker), but she has played soccer at the University of Wisconsin. She's probably a natural athlete too. Her shot at getting into the NFL is pretty slim, but she was able to get an invite to the trial after a video appeared online showing her making field goals at an event. Pretty cool, huh?

Let's hope she kicks (ha) ass. Wouldn't it be amazing to see a woman take the field to make a game-winning kick? Talk about Rudy-type inspiration. God I love that movie.

Did you all forget about Tiger Woods? Well, ever since he had a crazy episode regarding his car and a golf club back in 2009 and it turned out that he was cheating on his super hot gorgeous wife Elin Nordegren and it tore his family apart and he really hasn't done much professionally since, it's kind of easy to forget all about him. Until, of course, news of his dating life comes to light.

Turns out, his latest girlfriend is none other than hottie blonde skier Lindsey Vonn.

Beautiful, tall, athletic, did I say blonde, sure, anyone could see Tiger's attraction. She may not exactly have that, um, porn star look, but maybe his tastes have matured a bit since the scandal (yeah right).

Still, though, gotta wonder what a gorgeous, talented, extremely rich woman like Vonn is doing with a serial cheater like Woods. Because probably the first thing that went through her mind was: Better get this dude tested.

If you thought perhaps Hope Solo's new husband, Jerammy Stevens' legal woes may have blown over by now, think again! In fact, they only seem to be getting worse. Jerramy has been arrested again in Tampa, Florida after violating his probation from an October 2010 arrest for marijuana possession. Apparently, the violation resulted from the NFL player's November 12 alleged fourth-degree assault (for which charges were dropped) on then-fiancee Hope. And as the craaaaazy story goes, the two were hitched the next day. So bizarre, right?

So now, although Hope's new hubby is in jail and a bond has not yet been set, the U.S. women's soccer star seems to want the world to know that it's the media that's screwed up.

When you hear about domestic violence, it's not usually a woman who's on the offender end of the situation. But this time, the alleged offender is not only a woman, but she's a woman who should be a role model for girls everywhere. On Thursday evening, former WNBA player Chamique Holdsclaw was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault for allegedly bashing in the windows of her ex-girlfriend's SUV with a baseball bat -- and then shooting at the car with a gun. Holy crap.

WNBA player Jennifer Lacy told the police she'd been working out when Holdsclaw, her ex, came and asked if she could put some things in her car. Soon after she let her, Lacy noticed her car smelled like gasoline and that Holdsclaw was following her. Eek! When she pulled over at a friend's house, things got really scary.

Most people had no idea that she was engaged, but the cat's out of the bag now that Hope Solo's fiance, Jerramy Stevens, was released from jail after being arrested for fourth-degree assault.

Yes, Hope Solo has a fiance, and yes, they were planning to get married yesterday -- after dating for a mere couple of months. Ok, so who the heck is Jerramy Stevens? Turns out Hope must dig athletes, because Jerramy is a former football player for the Washington Huskies.

As to what led to his arrest, well -- apparently there was a huge party that took place in the wee hours of the morning on Monday, and things got a little out of hand (to say the least).

I'll admit, I'm pretty torn on this whole "tennis grunting" controversy. I played tennis for an entire week of hell so I honestly couldn't tell you if grunting that loudly is required to hit the ball with such velocity. Either way, listening to it can either be rather entertaining or super distracting. Now the whole grunting debacle is making the news yet again. Maria Sharapova is throwing in her support of a ban for women's tennis -- even though her screams have been measured at more than 101 decibels, which is comparable to a chain saw.

"Bottom line is the right answer has been taken by the tour," Sharapova told Reuters in response to the ban, which would require umpires to have hand-held devices that can measure the noise on the court. This all sounds pretty insane and ridiculous to me, but apparently fans and other competitors have complained enough for this to be an actual necessary thing.
