In a Vine video of the Boston Marathon bombing, I noticed a runner who was knocked clean off his feet by the blast. Then a photo of the runner collapsed on the ground went viral. That was 78-year-old marathoner Bill Iffrig from Seattle, Washington. He was just five feet away from the finish line and "feeling pretty good" about completing the race.

In the photo he looks dazed. But he was alive and still conscious. And he managed to finish that race.

Normally when you hear about a "call girl scandal", it's because some guy -- usually a married politician -- is caught with his pants down patronizing prostitutes. It's not too often that the call girl scandal is instead a married Olympic track star who is also a $600-an-hour call girl. I mean, I don't think you ever hear that. But we do now.

Olympic track star Suzy Favor Hamilton admitted to having a double life as a married mother and Las Vegas call girl. And if the Lifetime channel hasn't opted this story yet, I'd be shocked. Anyway, let's find out what the heck is going on here ...

The New York City Marathon scheduled for Sunday November 4 was finally canceled on Friday night amidst enormous pressure from those who believed (and rightly so) that it was poor taste and rather classless of Mayor Michael Bloomberg to go forward with the event just one week after Superstorm Sandyravaged the city and plunged so many into darkness for days on end.

The power has been restored to many in Manhattan, but those in New Jersey and other parts of the area are STILL without electricity while the marathon had generators that could have powered for days. “Poor taste” does not even begin to cover it. The outcry was immediate and severe. Petitions gathered close to 30,000 signatures and many were going to refuse to run on principle.

In a recent interview with track star Lolo Jones on the Today show, she broke down in tears over her fourth-place finish in Tuesday's 100-meter hurdles final. She also had some choice words for her critics who "ripped [her] to shreds" right before she competed.

You may think she's just another athlete whose complaints are sour grapes. But she was specifically referring to a piece in The New York Times came out that questioned whether Jones was overhyped and undertalented. It compared her to Anna Kournikova, the former tennis player who never won a WTA title. They implied that Anna was known more for her image and her sexy looks, and that her talent was meaningless, if not nonexistent.

I can't imagine reading this would have any effect on the outcome of her race, but it's a shame that the NYT did this to Lolo.

Voula PapachristouSo here's something you probably never saw coming. An Olympian, Greece's triple jumper Voula Papachristou, was booted from the Games all due to ... a social media gaffe. It's hard to believe she thought she could get away with it in the first place, but she probably didn't think they'd ever go so far as to expel her from the Olympics entirely.

Here's her Tweet: "With so many Africans in Greece... the West Nile mosquitoes will at least eat homemade food!!!"

Ugh. She obviously has the freedom to say whatever she wants to say. She just better be prepared to deal with what comes afterward, especially as an athlete on the world stage. Greece's Olympic Committee says her Tweet was "contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement." And I for one am glad they did what they did. Competing in the Games and representing your country is a privilege and not something that should ever be taken lightly.

When I first heard all the hype about Olympic hurdler Lolo Jones and her sexual status, I thought it was a whole lot of fooey. In my eyes, I could care less if an athlete is a virgin, that has nothing to do with her performance in her sport. What I do care about, though, is seeing her succeed. Saturday night, that she did. Jones secured her spot on a second consecutive Olympic team at the U.S. Olympic Trials when she finished third in the women's 100-meter hurdles final with a time of 12.6 seconds. Wowza. I can't even tie my shoes in 12.6 seconds!

The more impressive story? Things have been hard for Jones since her last go at the gold. Last August, the 29-year-old underwent back surgery and a pair of hamstring injuries. Now after a whole lot of hard work she's back on the U.S. Olympic team and heading to the 2012 London Olympic Games.

If that's not a prime example of "If you want it, you can make it happen" -- I don't know what is.

As much as I'd love to think otherwise, it appears that Ryan Sutter, husband of Trista from The Bachelorette, truly is Prince Charming by every stretch of the imagination. (I was so hoping he had just one tiny flaw!) Not only is Ryan super gorgeous, romantic, and an amazing husband and father -- he's also one hell of a friend. He's running in the Boston Marathon today to help out his good pal, Survivor winner Ethan Zohn, who can't compete this year because he just underwent a stem-cell transplant treatment for the Hodgkin's lymphoma he's battling.

Ryan will be running on his behalf to support the charity Ethan co-founded, Grassroots Soccer. Aww -- whatta guy!

Tomorrow brings my favorite sporting event of the year -- the Boston Marathon. In its 116th year, it's the pinnacle of running achievement for many. As a runner, I find it fascinating to watch the gaits, speed, and strength of the runners, and I imagine myself running alongside them someday. But it's also about so much more than that.

Each runner has a story as to why they've trekked to Boston for this event, and what it means to them. Some are there to improve their time or to check an item off of their bucket list; but for others it's fulfilling a deeper need. I always think the race is more fun to watch when there are familiar names and faces you're following. So besides a good friend of mine who's running it (go, Katie!), I've come up with a list of six other runners who's inspirational stories I've come across that I'll be trying to follow and rooting for as well. Most are names you've never heard of before, but their stories will inspire all.

  • Don't Blame Philadelphia Marathon Deaths on the Race

Prepare for the hue and cry. The deaths of two runners at the Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday are already drawing out the inevitable "ZOMG, marathons are so dangerous, we must stop people from putting one foot in front of the other in fast succession over 26+ miles right NOW!" It's a predictable response to tragedy. But predictability doesn't make for a well-thought out argument.

That lives were lost in Philadelphia this weekend -- 21-year-old University of Pennsylvania senior Jeffrey Lee at the finish line, a 40-year-old man about a quarter mile before the race's end -- is tragic, for sure. But let's be clear about one thing.
