p&g adStand on your couches, chairs, or desks and put your hands together for Procter & Gamble because, Captain, my Captain, they deserve a gosh darn round of applause for their new commercial. Pegged to the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, P&G is saluting all the moms out there who take their kids to soccer practice, or go to volleyball matches, or wait at gymnastic lessons; who do loads of laundry, who cook meal after meal, who are there in victory and in defeat. The tag line of the ad, "The hardest job in the world is the best job in the world. Thanks, Mom" rings true with every mama in the world. No matter what country you're from, mothers, and mothers of athletes, can relate to what it's like raising an active child.

Get out the tissues, the commercial is a real, bonafide tear-jerker.

Ryan Seacrest Hosting 2012 Olympics: 12 Reasons This Is a Terrible Idea

Posted by Jill Baughman
on Apr 4, 2012 at 3:40 PM

Ryan SeacrestWhew, that Ryan Seacrest -- he is one busy dude. Not only is he doing all of his American Idol hosting duties and unleashing pseudo-celebs like the Kardashians upon the world, it seems like his next big adventure will take place in London. Yep, he's going to be part of NBC's coverage of the Summer Olympics.

His being part of the Olympics was the "big NBC announcement" the network couldn't stop talkin' about all week. Not that he was taking over for Matt Lauer on the Today show, which the two discussed during an awkward interview:

"Where do you see yourself in five years?" Lauer asked.

"The same height," Seacrest said, laughing.

Uhh? You see? This is why sports plus Seacrest just don't go together.

Daniel Craig's 007 Opener for the Olympics Better Include Kate Middleton

Daniel CraigWhen watching the Olympics, sometimes it feels as if a majority of the opening ceremonies is an excuse for the host city and country to show off how amazeballs it is. I remember watching the Opening Ceremonies in Beijing on August 8, 2008. After being completely blown away, I'll admit my immediate reaction was: OMG. China is the coolest country everrrr.

So it's no wonder London is pulling out all the stops for the Olympics this summer. And what better icon to represent the awesomeness of being English than James Bond (I guess besides Harry Potter?). You can't have a worldwide spectacle in England without the one and only Daniel Craig, it seems. And even the Queen's in on it!

The Obama Documentary Is Just Another Hollywood Fable

Moms Matter 2012

The highly anticipated Obama documentary is out and it's definitely worth a look. As someone with a background in media and as a moderate Republican woman who voted for President Obama, my response to the film was mixed.

From a production standpoint, it's great. My issue is in the messaging. In shot after shot, we are supposed to see President Obama as a young buck, alone and facing a series of unprecedented and unpredictable crises. That's why the documentary opens with a snowstorm.

70-Year-Old Olympian Proves It's Never Too Late to Go for the Gold

Posted by Jacqueline Burt

horseIf Betty White were a Japanese equestrian, she'd be Hiroshi Hoketsu. The 70-year-old veteran rider qualified for the London Olympics on Thursday -- that's right, the Olympics! And while there's no official word yet on whether or not Hoketsu will actually compete, it's still a fairly staggering athletic accomplishment. (The oldest Olympian ever, apparently, was Swedish shooter Oscar Swahn, who was 72 when he won a silver medal in 1920.)

Hoketsu says it's a "miracle" that he made it this far, but it sounds more to me like the end result of years and years of training and hard work.

Not to mention a second, and perhaps last, chance at an Olympic medal ...

Talk of Olympic Skier Lindsey Vonn's Divorce Is Troubling

Posted by Maressa Brown
on Dec 7, 2011 at 4:33 PM

lindsey vonnThere's really no other way to put it: Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn is winning! The champion skier was three for three in the World Cup competition this past weekend, winning downhill races on both Friday and Saturday, as well as the Super-G (an Alpine skiing "speed" event) on Sunday. Totally awesome! She deserves to enjoy this moment.

But unfortunately, despite her amazing wins, there's a lot of "tsk, tsk"ing going on about Vonn's personal life. It's only been 10 days since she announced her divorce from her husband of four years, Thomas Vonn, a former U.S. ski team member himself who was also her closest adviser on the World Cup tour. Now, some spectators want to chalk her success up to "trying to prove herself" post-breakup or seem to be clucking about how amazing it is that Vonn is succeeding, despite her "turmoil in her personal life." Come on now, really? If Vonn wasn't a woman, would her divorce even be more than a passing thought?

Kate Middleton & Prince William Are Joining Great Britain's Olympic Team

Posted by Maressa Brown
on Dec 1, 2011 at 3:01 PM

prince harry prince william kate middletonOne major perk of the 2012 Olympics being held in London? The neo-Camelot/royals for the 21st century -- Kate Middleton, Prince William, and Prince Harry -- will be there! And not just as spectators. Oh no, no! They've been brought on in an official capacity, as the glam newlyweds and their brother have been named official ambassadors for Britain's Olympic and Paralympic teams. They'll bring their royal star power to a group of 27 of the country's "most inspirational and accomplished Olympians" who were unveiled as ambassadors earlier this year. Right, so in other words, it's not just some fancypants title that has no real meaning behind it.

According to the palace, Kate, Wills, and Harry will "promote the importance of participation in Olympic and Paralympic sport and encourage greater awareness of the Olympic and Paralympic values." Basically, they're going to be cheerleaders for British and Northern Irish athletes ... which is not only awesome, but very fitting.

Nancy Kerrigan vs. Tonya Harding Boxing Match: Who's Your Money On?

Posted by Maressa Brown
on Oct 12, 2011 at 11:24 AM

nancy kerriganIn the mid-'90s, before O.J. Simpson and the "trial of the century," there was another scandal that rocked the sports world. In one of the most moronic sabotage attempts ever, trashy Tonya Harding had her ex-hubby and bodyguard hire a guy to attack her skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan, smashing her leg with a baton, with hopes of preventing her from skating in the 1994 Olympics. Thankfully, Kerrigan recovered and was able to score an Olympic silver medal, and Harding was charged with covering up the assault. That was all a long time ago, and you'd think it'd be water under the bridge. But it's not.

Apparently, some rich guy from the U.K. still wants to see these ladies go head-to-head and resolve their "feud" once and for all ... in a boxing match. Alki David, a digital media entrepreneur, says he wants the women to face off in three one-minute rounds on November 5. And he'll pay them each $100,000 to duke it out.

Awesome Double Amputee Runner Qualifies for Olympics

Posted by Nicole Fabian-Weber
on Jul 20, 2011 at 12:09 PM

olympicsOscar Pistorius, a South African runner who also goes by the name Blade Runner, just qualified to compete in the 2012 London Olympics. "Big whoop," you're thinking now, right? "I'm not a runner aficionado. Why should I care who's competing? Hell, it's still 2011!" Well, the reason you should care is because Pistorius also happens to be a double amputee. I see your interest is piqued now, friend.

Twenty-four-year-old Pistorious, who competes on carbon fiber legs, almost didn't qualify for the race, though. And not because his time wasn't good enough. Because the International Association of Athletics Federation actually felt that he had an advantage.

An advantage? The dude is in a running contest without any legs.

South Korea Wins Olympic Bid Because of Secret Weapon

Posted by Jeanne Sager
on Jul 6, 2011 at 2:00 PM

Kim Yu-NaExcuse the mixed sports metaphors, but the Olympic Games decision was starting to look an awful lot like a baseball game. South Korea had tried twice before to convince the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that they could host the games. They were about to strike out a third time on the bid to bring them home to Pyeongchang in 2018. Thank goodness those crafty Koreans have a secret weapon to help them win their bid.

Fans of the Winter Games couldn't forget Kim Yu-na, the figure skating gold medalist who broke records in Vancouver last year. South Korea's first-ever figure skating champ in the Olympics set world records with her scores, re-igniting interest in the sport as a whole and her country's athletes. And she was ready and willing to remind the IOC that South Korea had its best over showing in Vancouver.
