The U.S. Olympic hockey team just beat the pants off the Russian Olympic hockey team. Okay, maybe it wasn't a total slaughter, they won 3-2. But this is Russia! Russians live on ice. Have you been there? I have. It's damn cold. They got ice in their blood, I tells ya.
The winning score came from T.J. Oshie, who scored four times in a final shootout. Apparently Oshie was chosen by the selection committee exactly for this very thing -- his amazing shootout ability. Said general manager David Poile:
You know at some point we are going to end up in a shootout, and we are going to want T.J. Oshie.
Twitter is going wild for Oshie, calling this the best performance that the Olympics will see from an American. Oshie is also getting a lot of props for saying he's not a hero, instead saying: "The American heroes are wearing camo. That's not me."
And here's the score itself:
USA! USA! USA!
The game is a preliminary game and will have little impact on who takes home medals. But it reminded everyone of an old rivalry when a team of U.S. college students beat the gold-medal hogging Russian team in the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York in 1980.
So that's why everyone is so excited, y'all. 'Cause they're Russian. We like to beat 'em.
