This isn't what I look like on Sundays but whatever ...It's that time of year again! No, not back to school, not the changing of the weather and leaves, not the time to stop wearing white. Tonight is the kickoff to the 2012 NFL season!
The defending Super Bowl champs, the New York Giants, will be taking on the Dallas Cowboys at 8:30 p.m. ET. So, it's a little weird to be watching football on a Wednesday night, but I'm stoked that the time has finally come.
As a football fan who's a woman to boot, there are a lot of things to look forward to over the next few months. Don't believe me? Eyes hurt from rolling? The only thing you can think about is your significant other staring into the TV and ignoring you every weekend? Well, read on, and hopefully this will help you get a little bit excited about what's to come.
Here are six things we female football fanatics (well, at least I am) are excited about for the upcoming season:
1.) Watching all the hot players: I know, I know, I may have pushed the feminist movement back a few decades, but men get to ogle gorgeous women all the time -- why can't we do the same? Some of these players are hot. They're fun to look at. Sue me.
2.) Being able to drink on Sundays: When it isn't football season, for whatever reason, I feel kind of weird having a beverage or two on a Sunday. No real reason for it, and I definitely don't need those extra calories. But come football season, it's on. It's a great way to hang out with friends and extend the fun times of the weekend.
3.) Getting able to escape real life for the afternoon: When I watch a game, I may get stressed out about who's winning, but it's fun losing myself in the competition and forgetting about all my other everyday troubles. I have a one-track mind when watching a game. Work problems? Eh. Love life issues? Whatever. Family woes? Nope. Did my favorite strong safety just intercept a pass for a touchdown? Hell yes, time to celebrate!
4.) Feeling like you're part of something: When you root for a team, you have an entire community you feel you're a part of. Correct me if I'm wrong, but most women want to feel like they're part of a group, and female fans look out for other female fans. It's something you can bond over and talk about with total strangers if you have to. It sure can be an easy way to make some new friends.
5.) Loading up on female-centric NFL clothes: The NFL has finally come around to female football fans. They're producing more than just pink jerseys! I wear my Steelers shirts, hats, scarves, earrings, shoes, socks, gloves, and sweatpants every chance I can get. Take a look at the newest initiative from Kohl's using Dancing With the Stars pros Kym Johnson and Peta Murgatroyd (photo above). How cute, right? I may never look like them come Sundays, but it's nice to see football gear take a feminine turn -- and seeing celebrities endorse it too!
6.) Bonding with or hating on your significant other: If you can't stand football, I think you should try watching a game with some friends and your partner (if you have one) and see what happens. You could get into it much more than you realize! And if your significant other is a die-hard fan, he'll surely appreciate the effort and open you to a whole new world of entertainment. Or, if you're rooting for a rival team, there's nothing like a little friendly competition.
Of course, there are a million and one more reasons to be pumped for this season, but this is what comes to my mind as I reflect on the upcoming game tonight. Looking forward to grabbing a beer, inviting some friends over, screaming at the TV, and relishing in the fact that the off-season is finally over.
Are you looking forward to the NFL season, or are you dreading it?
