Welp, that was embarrassing. But not nearly as embarrassing as it could have been if U.S. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps had actually failed to come in last place in the mens' 400 meter qualifying heat today. So he's still in the Olympics, but boy that was close. Ohh the suspense!
After all the build-up Phelps gets, and his stellar performances at the previous Olympics, nobody saw this little cliff-hanger coming. Most people thought he would qualify no problem. This guy is a six-time Gold medalist. He's just three medals away from winning the most medals in an Olympics ever. Watch the clip below to see how much we build him up as this unstoppable swimming champion. Which he is ... but ... it just goes to show how quickly the tables turn if you have an off morning, like Phelps clearly did.
I didn't expect those guys to go that fast in the heats. I think the only thing that matters is getting a spot. You can't get the gold medal from the morning.
Doesn't instill a whole lot of confidence, does it? Now who knows? If is performance this morning is any indication, maybe he's not going to just swim right in and take medals in every single event like everyone expects. But honestly, what a great lesson for our nation of entitled youth. Winning the grand prize is not something you automatically deserve. Nothing is a guarantee, and you can never underestimate your opponent. Don't come off your came for even a moment. A few seconds off and you lose.
Hopefully this is the wake-up call Phelps needs to start kicking some major swimming butt out there in the pool. USA! USA! C'mon, Michael! Get that work ethic you are so famous for back. The nation is counting on you, dude.
Were you squirming in your seat while watching Phelps in the the qualifyer?

Screw you Cynthia! Don't watch then. What kind of American are you to write this piece of trash? If he doesn't win he doesn't but calling him lazy is a crappy thing to do. Have you ever been in the Olympics? How many gold medals have you won? What have you done to represent our country? Shame on you. This is a pathetic thing to write.
It's a pathetic thing to do especially while they're going on. Very disrespectful to our young athletes.
He could have been trying to psych them out - you know, make them think he's not swimming as great anymore so they won't have to try as hard and then BOOM, win the medal race by a longshot. Who knows? Or maybe he was being lazy about it. He does represent the USA, so we all have the right to criticize him. Overall, I think he's a great asset to the Olympic team and I am proud that he has done as much as he has, being so young. I was on the edge of my seat in the last summer Olympics when he was swimming - he puts on a good show.
I watched and was practically screaming at my tv, along with my 3 year old. If he doesn't win tonight, he doesn't win. But I don't think it has anything to do with being lazy.
Cynthia,i don't see you competing..
so until then shut the fuck up.
...or maybe he was taking it easy, saving himself for the big race. Whether he was first or last doesn't matter. What matters is that he's there.
And when YOU have 16 Olympic Medals hanging around your neck, THEN you can start calling our athletes lazy. Until then............
As someone who swam competitively for over a decade, I can tell you that its not all that uncommon for the top swimmers to take it down a notch on the qualifying heats to save up for the races that actually count. Yeah, he cut it a little close, but calling him lazy for doing that is just misguided and demonstrates your lack of knowledge about the sport.
