Joe Paterno Statue Has Become a Symbol of Jerry Sandusky and Needs to Go

Joe Paterno statue

In the middle of all the sickening details that have come out during the Jerry Sandusky scandal, a smaller controversy is brewing. This one is over the bronze statue of Penn State's former football head coach Joe Paterno. Paterno is one of the many prominent people in the university's athletic department who for years apparently helped cover up Sandusky's horrifying molestation and rape of young boys he was supposed to be mentoring.

The debate is over whether Penn State should get rid of the Joe Paterno statue outside the football stadium on campus or keep it. The answer is that they're going to keep it -- at least for now. And for the umpteenth time throughout this whole mess, they've done the wrong thing.

While I understand that Paterno, who died in January, did a great service to Penn State's football program as its very successful head coach and donated millions of dollars to the team, he was also a hypocrite, plain and simple. Because while he was giving all that time and money and doing all that good, he was turning his back on impressionable young boys who had dreams of being Penn State athletes -- but were living in hell as Sandusky's victims.

There are few things more scarring than sexual abuse, and by hiding the truth and failing to report Sandusky's repulsive actions, Paterno is partly responsible for what happened. He shares the blame for the damage Sandusky did to those children -- damage they will suffer from for a long time to come.

Since Paterno himself has become a symbol of the Sandusky sex abuse scandal, the Paterno statue is also a symbol, and it needs to be torn down immediately. As in yesterday. Such a reminder of something so terrible and painful and corrupt has no place on Penn State's campus or anywhere else. Statues are meant to pay tribute to someone honorable. Paterno doesn't deserve that kind of accolade considering what he is accused of doing.

Penn State officials are kidding themselves if they think that anyone will ever be able to look at that statue again without thinking of Sandusky and all the evil he did -- with Paterno's help. The school is making even more of a mockery of itself by leaving the monument standing. Those in charge would be wise to listen to the many people who are pleading with them for the statue to be removed. Otherwise, they're just making the big black mark on their name and reputation even darker.

Do you think Penn State should take the Joe Paterno statue down?

Some people are so twisted and conflicted! Why did Spanier pursue Curtis Enis with such vigour, to the letter of the law, and ignore so many other laws? Clery Act? A few laws about not sexually abusing, molesting and sodomising children? What was JoePa's excuse? The prescription for his glasses so wrong he could not see right from wrong? Tear down that Gargoyle outside beaver stadium and melt it down. JoePa isn't here to defend himself - he had 14+ years to consider the best defensive move when it should have taken him seconds. That shows just how bad he was as a Coach and leader. It's time to get with reality - and the Trustees need to all go. They remain incompetent. Thay have been out of touch and remain so. They are still putting Paterno over the needs of the University, the Community and even good media. Boy could they do with some good media!

Even if he was alive, there is NOTHING he could say to justify his lack of action!

It should go without a thought. If he were here, what's to defend? We all know he knew. He's an ass who was only thinking about himself and a game. TAKE IT DOWN.

Quit blaming Joe! the person who should be blamed is Jerry and the guy who caught him hurting those boys!!! The man should be brought up on charges also. Joe got the information secondhand. Oh I dare you to go to a CPS worker and say a man said to me that he seen someone abusing a boy. they will laugh in your face.

@silverdawn, your comment is infuriating! I do blame Joe! And Spanier, and Schultz, and Curley, and anyone else who knew for more than a decade that boys were being raped and didn't do anything about it! You say that Paterno got the information secondhand... but he knew already! Louis Freeh's report clearly states that he knew and he covered it up to protect his football program. It's nauseating! And you are absolutely wrong about CPS laughing in your face if you tell them you heard about a child being raped. I know two women who work for the DHS in my city and they would take that very seriously and would not let it rest until they got to the bottom of it. Paterno and his cronies are guilty of aiding and abetting child rape. Don't you doubt that for one second! They should all be in prison.

Are you f*cking kidding me?? Billsfan and silverdawn, I hope the two of you are not parents.  Because anyone who has a child could never write the things you wrote.  Little kids were SODOMIZED and ABUSED and RAPED, and this man knew about it and chose to do nothing!  I wish Paterno was alive so that they could put the man in jail and let him rot!  He was evil personified.

Kathy, what did I say? I just said he isnt here to defend himself. Thats it, thats all. It does not mean that I dont think what happened wasnt horrible. I blame the upper management, I blame the kid who say the kid being raped and didnt report to the police and most of all i blame Sandusky.
