'I'll Have Another' & Triple Crown Matchup Could Mean First Win in 34 Years! (VIDEO)

i'll have anotherAnd they're off! Tomorrow's Belmont Stakes will be one of the most anxiously watched races ever, with I'll Have Another poised to be the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 -- 1978!! Can you believe it? Eleven horses have come thisclose to achieving the ultimate feat in racing since then (winning both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness) but not a single one has conquered all three.

I'll Have Another could be just hours away from making horse racing history!

Unless, of course, the Belmont track proves to be his downfall, as with so many others. What makes this track so tricky?

The one-and-a-half mile dirt track at Belmont Park is longer than most, and the final stretch begins about one quarter of a mile earlier than jockeys generally prefer. So what works on other tracks won't necessarily equal victory at Belmont.

But jockey Mario Gutierrez says he "did his homework" before the Preakness, so hopefully he'll be hitting the books tonight, too. Because it's about damn time for another Triple Crown Winner!! Seriously!

Let's do this thing!

Do you think I'll Have Another will win the Triple Crown tomorrow?

UPDATE: Since this post was published, I'll Have Another
was scratched from the Belmont Stakes because of a leg injury.

Oh, what a shame. Those horses want so much to do what they're trained to do. Often to the point of injuring themselves. It is a heartless sport. They are bred to be as fast as possible, which means thin, light bones are preferred - but those bones just can't take the pounding! (I don't know how this horse was injured, but I know these injuries are far too common).

I've seen him move. Baring an injury. He's going to win. He moves like a winner.

Dissappointed that he won't run, but so grateful that his owner and trainer thought of the well-being of the horse.  As the owner of (owned by?) two retired race horses who were once worth big $$$ as racehorses, I'm so grateful to the owners and trainers who give these awesome animals a second chance at a new career and choose to retire them before they break down. If I'm ever in the market for another OTTB (off the track Thoroughbred) I'll keep my eyes open for an I'll Have Another baby!  I really really like the horse.
