You know all about yoga's health benefits already: The practice promotes relaxation, flexibility, strength ... toned glutes, lean legs, etc., etc. But I bet you didn't know going to a yoga class can literally save your life. And I mean a yoga class, singular.
Just ask Hope Solo.
Hey, I thought we were talking about yoga -- what's with the soccer reference?
Well, that's just the thing. Hope Solo and the rest of the U.S. Women's National Team owe their lives to yoga, seriously! If the soccer players weren't busy Downward Dogging and Tree Posing at a yoga class in one area of their Vancouver hotel, they might have walked right into the gruesome scene unfolding in another area of the hotel at the same time!
While Solo & Co. were warming up and cooling down, a local gang leader was being shot to death in the hotel lobby ... which the teammates planned to pass through on their way to Starbucks post-yoga!
Solo even tweeted about her near-miss:
"Saved by our instant yoga session. Was about to walk to starbucks when all hell broke loose in the lobby of our hotel! Life is precious..."
Whew! That was a close one.
Hey, that was just a fluke! How can yoga save my life, too?
Okay, perhaps yoga won't come to your rescue as dramatically as it did for Hope Solo, but it will still do all kinds of good, life-preserving things for your body. Maybe it'll lower your blood pressure or help you to lose weight. Maybe you'll learn to prevent muscle strain and the resulting aches and pains.
Or maybe you'll narrowly avoid a head-on collision with a tractor trailer by sticking around class for an extra few minutes to compare yoga mats with your instructor.
Don't knock it. After all, yoga has the power to keep "Hope" alive. (HA!)
Have you ever experienced a scary "near-miss" like Hope Solo and her teammates?
